Released in late 2017 under the internal code-name Project Scorpio, the Microsoft Xbox One X was engineered as a high-performance mid-generation upgrade for the Xbox One family. Designed to target native 4K resolution gaming and High Dynamic Range (HDR) video output, the Xbox One X featured a custom system-on-chip with 6 teraflops of graphical compute power and 12GB of shared GDDR5 memory. Microsoft achieved this performance inside a compact chassis by moving the power supply entirely inside the console and replacing traditional air cooling heatsinks with a vapor chamber liquid cooling system mated to a radial intake fan.
The Xbox One X was aimed squarely at core gamers, visual enthusiasts, and home theater users who demanded high framerates and maximum fidelity. Because the machine drew significantly more power than the original Xbox One or Xbox One S, component density and heat management were central to its layout. While this design resulted in a sleek footprint that fit easily into living room media consoles, it also meant that internal components operated under consistent thermal and electrical stress during demanding gaming sessions.
Over extended periods of use, several standard failure points tend to manifest on the Xbox One X platform. Mechanical stress on the rear panel frequently leads to damaged or torn pins inside the HDMI 2.0b port, resulting in a black screen output or lost display handshakes. Thermal paste degradation is another common issue; as original thermal compound dries out and loses conductivity, the console may exhibit excessive fan noise before triggering automatic thermal shutdowns. Mechanical mechanical hard drive failure is also widespread. The internal 1TB mechanical drive is susceptible to bad sectors, which can trigger system update failure codes such as E100, E101, or E102, alongside severe system stuttering or boot loops. Other known hardware faults include failing internal power supply units and optical disc drive laser degradation.
