Safety

Step-by-step

Remove the battery cover and batteries
1 minSlide the battery door off the back of the controller and remove both AA batteries.

Pry off the left side grip panel
2 minInsert a plastic prying tool into the seam along the left handle grip and lever it outward to release the plastic retaining clips.

Pry off the right side grip panel
2 minInsert the plastic prying tool into the seam of the right handle grip and pop the panel free from the housing.

Puncture the battery compartment label
1 minLocate the hidden screw underneath the central sticker inside the battery tray and pierce through the center of the label using a TR8 Security Torx driver.

Unscrew the five outer housing screws
3 minUse a TR8 Security Torx screwdriver to remove the four handle screws and the single central battery compartment screw.

Lift away the front faceplate
1 minTurn the controller front-side up and pull the plastic faceplate straight off the internal assembly.

Remove the rear enclosure shell
2 minCarefully separate the rear plastic casing from the inner frame and set it aside.

Pull off the analog thumbstick caps
1 minGrasp the plastic thumbstick caps firmly and pull them straight up off the analog metal shafts.

Unscrew the top circuit board
3 minUse a T6 Torx screwdriver to remove the two screws holding the upper circuit board to the controller frame.

Unclip the bumper assembly
2 minUse a spudger to gently pry the plastic bumper bracket (LB/RB) up off the center clips above the Xbox button.

Clean button contacts and PCB
2 minMoisten a cotton swab with 90%+ isopropyl alcohol and wipe down the conductive button pads and contact surfaces.

Install the replacement thumbstick caps
2 minAlign the D-shaped slot on the bottom of the new thumbstick caps with the shafts and press them down firmly.

Reassemble the controller housing
4 minSnap the bumper bracket into place, align the front and rear shells over the frame, and secure all five TR8 screws.
