To reduce production costs and increase durability, Nintendo implemented a clever engineering design: rather than using two separate display assemblies like its folding counterparts, the original 2DS utilizes a single large LCD panel internally divided by the plastic chassis into an upper viewing area and a lower resistive touchscreen. The 2DS was designed with younger players and budget-conscious gamers in mind, offering a comfortable, ergonomic grip for extended play sessions. Its rigid, non-folding chassis eliminates fragile hinge points, making it significantly more resistant to physical snapping than clamshell consoles. However, because it frequently served as a primary travel device carried in backpacks and handled by young children, the exposed screen surfaces lack natural folding protection, leaving the front plastic housing and underlying single-panel LCD vulnerable to direct impact damage.
