Step-by-step
- 1
Eject the stylus and SD card
1 minSlide the stylus out of its slot on the side of the console. Push the SD card in until it clicks, then release and pull it straight out.

Loosen the battery cover screws
2 minUse a Phillips #00 screwdriver to loosen the two captive screws on the battery cover plate. These screws will remain attached to the door.

Remove the battery cover
1 minPry open the battery cover using a plastic spudger near the top notch. Lift the cover away from the device.

Lift out the battery
1 minInsert a plastic opening tool beneath the battery notch. Lift and remove the rechargeable battery pack.

Peel off top rubber screw covers
2 minUse tweezers to gently pry off the two rubber pads located at the upper rear corners. Set them aside for reassembly.

Unscrew the rear housing
4 minRemove the ten Phillips #00 screws securing the rear shell to the front body. Keep track of screw lengths and locations.

Separate the rear casing
2 minGently lift the rear housing up starting from the bottom edge. Do not pull completely away yet as shoulder button cables are attached.

Disconnect shoulder button cables
3 minUse tweezers to disconnect the left and right shoulder button ribbon cables from the motherboard. Lift the rear cover away.

Unscrew the Circle Pad assembly
2 minLocate the metal Circle Pad module on the upper left of the board. Remove the two Phillips #00 screws securing it.

Unlock the Circle Pad ribbon cable
2 minUse a spudger to carefully flip up the black retaining flap on the Circle Pad ZIF connector. Slide the ribbon cable out.

Remove the Circle Pad module
1 minLift the Circle Pad joystick assembly out of the chassis. Remove the plastic cap and rubber washer if replacing them.

Clean button contacts
3 minDip a cotton swab in 99% isopropyl alcohol and gently scrub the copper button pads on the motherboard. Allow them to dry completely.

Position the new Circle Pad
2 minPlace the replacement Circle Pad module into its mounting recess on the chassis. Align the plastic orientation posts.

Secure the ribbon cable
2 minInsert the Circle Pad ribbon cable into the ZIF connector until fully seated. Push the black locking flap down to secure it.

Fasten the Circle Pad module
2 minReinstall the two Phillips #00 screws into the Circle Pad bracket. Tighten them until snug without over-torquing.

Reattach shoulder button ribbons
3 minHold the rear housing close to the motherboard and plug the L and R ribbon cables back into their connectors.

Reassemble the rear housing
4 minAlign the rear shell with the main body and snap it together. Reinstall the ten screws and re-stick the top rubber pads.

Reinstall the battery and cover
2 minPlace the battery back into its slot, ensuring contact alignment. Replace the cover plate and tighten the two captive screws.
After your Nintendo 2DS controller repair
Power the 2DS back on and test the controller repair function before you put every screw away. Check touch/display response, charging, cameras, buttons, and wireless as relevant to this repair. If something fails after closing the device, reopen carefully and reseat the connectors for this Nintendo 2DS job before assuming the part is defective. Keep leftover adhesive and screws labeled in case you need a second pass.
