Safety
- Ensure the console is completely powered off and unplugged from any charger before starting.
- Disconnect the battery before handling motherboard connectors or internal ribbons.

Step-by-step
- 1
Eject Stylus and SD Card
1 minPower down the console completely. Slide the stylus out of its slot and press the SD card to eject it from the side slot.

Loosen Battery Cover Screws
2 minUse a Phillips #00 screwdriver to loosen the two captive screws on the battery cover. These screws will remain attached to the cover.

Remove Battery Cover
1 minInsert a plastic opening tool into the pry notch on top of the battery cover. Gently lift and remove the cover from the chassis.

Disconnect Battery
2 minUse the flat end of a spudger to lift the battery cable connector straight up from its motherboard socket. Lift the battery out of the compartment.

Remove Rear Housing Screws
3 minRemove the ten Phillips #00 screws securing the rear lower housing to the console body.

Separate Rear Shell
2 minGently lift the lower rear housing up from the bottom edge. Do not pull it away completely yet, as shoulder button ribbons remain attached.

Disconnect Shoulder Button Cables
2 minUse tweezers to carefully lift the left and right shoulder button ribbon cable connectors straight up from the motherboard.

Set Aside Rear Shell
1 minLift the rear housing completely off the console and place it aside on your clean workspace mat.

Unlatch SD Reader ZIF Connector
2 minUse the tip of a spudger to flip up the dark locking flap on the SD card reader ribbon cable ZIF socket.

Remove Reader Retaining Screws
2 minRemove the two Phillips #00 screws securing the SD card reader module to the motherboard.

Extract Damaged Reader Module
2 minSlide the ribbon cable out of the ZIF socket and lift the defective SD card reader module out of the console.

Position Replacement Reader Module
2 minAlign the new SD card reader module over the screw posts and guide its ribbon cable gently into the open ZIF socket.

Secure ZIF Locking Flap
1 minVerify the ribbon cable is fully inserted, then flip the ZIF connector locking flap down to lock it in place.

Secure Reader Module
2 minReinstall the two Phillips #00 screws to lock the SD card reader assembly to the motherboard.

Reconnect Shoulder Button Cables
3 minPosition the rear housing near the motherboard and reattach both shoulder button ribbon cable connectors with your fingers or tweezers.

Reattach Rear Shell
3 minLower the rear housing onto the console, pressing along the edges until it snaps flush into place. Reinstall the ten Phillips #00 screws.

Reinstall Battery and Cover
2 minPlace the battery back into its bay, plug in its cable connector, replace the battery cover, and tighten the two captive screws.
After your Nintendo 2DS hard drive replacement
Power the 2DS back on and test the hard drive replacement function before you put every screw away. Check touch/display response, charging, cameras, buttons, and wireless as relevant to this repair. If something fails after closing the device, reopen carefully and reseat the connectors for this Nintendo 2DS job before assuming the part is defective.
