Step-by-step

Power Down the Console
1 minPress and hold the Power button, select Power Options, and turn off the device completely. Disconnect any attached Joy-Cons and charging cables.

Eject the MicroSD Card
1 minFlip open the kickstand on the back of the console. Press down on the MicroSD card until it clicks, then release and pull it out.

Remove Rear Tri-Point Screws
2 minUse a Y00 Tri-Point screwdriver to remove the four outer screws located on the corners of the back cover.

Remove Top Shell Screw
1 minUse a Phillips #00 screwdriver to remove the single screw on the top edge of the console near the headphone jack.

Remove Bottom Shell Screws
2 minUse a Phillips #00 screwdriver to remove the two screws located on the bottom edge on either side of the USB-C port.

Remove Side Rail Screws
2 minRemove the single center Phillips #00 screw from both the left and right Joy-Con slide rails.

Lift Off Back Cover
1 minGently lift the plastic back cover off the rear of the console, starting from the bottom edge near the USB-C port.

Unscrew MicroSD Card Reader
1 minUse a Phillips #00 screwdriver to remove the single screw securing the MicroSD card reader board to the metal shield.

Disconnect MicroSD Reader
2 minUse a plastic spudger to pry the MicroSD card reader press connector straight up off the motherboard and lift the board out.

Unscrew Metal Shield Plate
3 minUse a Phillips #00 screwdriver to remove the six screws securing the large metal heat shield plate.

Remove Shield Plate
1 minLift the metal heat shield plate straight up off the chassis to expose the battery and internal components.

Disconnect Battery Connector
2 minPlace the tip of a spudger under the battery connector wires and pry straight up to disconnect it from the motherboard socket.

Apply Isopropyl Alcohol
3 minApply a few drops of high-concentration isopropyl alcohol along the top and bottom edges of the battery well to soften the adhesive.

Pry Out Old Battery
4 minInsert a plastic opening tool under the outer long edge of the battery and gently lever it upward until the adhesive releases.

Clean Battery Well
2 minWipe away remaining adhesive residue in the battery compartment using a lint-free cloth dampened with isopropyl alcohol.

Apply New Adhesive
2 minLay down fresh precut battery adhesive strips in the empty battery tray and peel off the plastic backing.

Install Replacement Battery
2 minPlace the new battery into the well, aligning its cable near the motherboard socket, and press down firmly.

Plug In Battery
1 minAlign the battery connector over its motherboard socket and press down firmly until it snaps into place.

Reinstall Metal Shield Plate
3 minSet the metal heat shield back into position and secure it with the six Phillips #00 screws.

Reattach MicroSD Reader
2 minPress the MicroSD card reader connector onto the motherboard, reinsert the board, and replace its securing screw.

Reattach Back Cover and Screws
4 minSnap the back cover into place and secure it with the four Y00 rear screws, top screw, bottom screws, and side rail screws.
