Step-by-step

Power Off and Eject Cards
2 minCompletely shut down the Nintendo Switch OLED and remove any inserted game card and microSD card.

Remove Rear Housing Tri-Point Screws
3 minUse a Y00 Tri-point screwdriver to remove the four outer corner screws on the rear plastic housing.

Unscrew Kickstand Cavity Fasteners
3 minFlip up the kickstand and use a Y00 Tri-point driver to remove the two hidden screws inside the kickstand recess.

Remove Perimeter Frame Screws
4 minRemove the single top Phillips #00 screw, two bottom screws, and the middle screw from each Joy-Con rail edge.

Detach the Rear Cover
3 minInsert a plastic prying tool into the seam along the frame to unhook the plastic clips and lift off the rear housing.

Remove MicroSD Card Reader Bracket
3 minRemove the single Phillips #00 screw holding the microSD card reader module and metal bracket in place.

Disconnect MicroSD Card Reader
2 minUse a plastic spudger to gently pop the microSD card reader's press-connector straight up off the motherboard.

Unscrew Aluminum Heat Shield
4 minRemove the six Phillips #00 screws holding the silver aluminum heat shield plate to the inner chassis.

Lift Off the Aluminum Heat Shield
2 minCarefully lift the aluminum heat shield straight up off the console assembly and set it aside.

Disconnect the Battery Cable
2 minPry the battery connector straight up off the motherboard using a plastic spudger to safely cut power.

Unscrew the Copper Heat Pipe
3 minRemove the three Phillips #00 screws securing the copper heat pipe over the APU assembly.

Remove Copper Heat Pipe
2 minGently lift the copper heat pipe off the APU, releasing the seal created by old thermal paste.

Remove and Clean Cooling Fan
5 minDisconnect the fan ribbon cable, remove its three mounting screws, and clear out dust built up in the fins using compressed air.

Clean Old Thermal Paste
5 minWipe away all old, dried thermal compound from the APU spreader cap and copper heat pipe surface using 90%+ isopropyl alcohol and lint-free wipes.

Apply Fresh Thermal Paste
2 minDispense a small pea-sized dot of high-performance thermal paste directly onto the center of the APU thermal cap.

Reinstall Heat Pipe and Reassemble
10 minReattach the heat pipe, reconnect the fan and battery, and secure the aluminum shield and back cover in reverse order.
