Step-by-step
- 1
Power off the console
1 minTurn off your Nintendo Switch OLED completely by holding the power button and selecting Power Options > Turn Off. Do not leave the console in sleep mode.

Remove the microSD card
1 minFlip open the kickstand on the back of the console and remove any inserted microSD card or game cartridge.

Unscrew the rear panel
2 minUse a Tri-point Y00 screwdriver to remove the four outer screws located on the corners of the rear panel.

Remove top and bottom screws
2 minUse a Phillips #00 screwdriver to remove the single screw on the top edge and the two screws on the bottom edge near the USB-C port.

Remove side rail screws
2 minLocate the middle screw on each Joy-Con side rail and remove both Phillips #00 screws.

Remove kickstand area screws
2 minOpen the kickstand fully and use a Phillips #00 screwdriver to remove the two screws beneath the kickstand assembly.

Lift off the back cover
2 minInsert a plastic spudger into the seam along the edge and carefully pry the rear plastic cover off the console.

Unscrew the metal heat shield
3 minUse a Phillips #00 screwdriver to remove the six screws securing the metal shield plate to the inner frame.

Lift off the metal heat shield
2 minGently lift the metal heat shield straight up to detach it from the thermal pad underneath and expose the internal components.

Disconnect the battery
2 minUse a plastic spudger to pry the battery connector straight up out of its socket on the motherboard.

Disconnect the card reader ZIF cable
2 minUse tweezers or a spudger to flip up the locking flap on the ZIF connector, then pull the game card reader ribbon cable straight out.

Unscrew the game card reader board
2 minRemove the three Phillips #00 screws holding the game card reader and headphone jack assembly in place.

Remove the game card reader assembly
2 minCarefully lift the defective game card reader assembly up and out of the console housing.

Install the replacement card reader
2 minPlace the new game card reader assembly into position, aligning it with the screw posts and headphone jack cutout.

Secure the card reader board
2 minReinstall the three Phillips #00 screws to firmly anchor the new game card reader module.

Reconnect the ribbon cable
2 minInsert the game card reader ribbon cable back into the ZIF socket and press the locking flap down to secure it.

Reconnect the battery
1 minPress the battery connector down into its socket on the motherboard until it snaps into place.

Reinstall heat shield and back cover
5 minSet the metal shield back in place, secure its screws, and snap the back cover on before re-securing all exterior screws.
