Step-by-step

Power Off the Console
1 minPress and hold the power button, then select Power Options and choose Turn Off. Remove any inserted game cards or microSD cards.

Remove MicroSD Card
1 minOpen the card slot cover on the bottom edge and press the microSD card to eject it.

Unscrew the Back Panel
2 minUse a Y00 Tri-point screwdriver to remove the four rear screws near the corners of the back plate.

Remove Edge Screws
2 minUse a Phillips #00 driver to remove two screws from the bottom edge and two screws from the top edge.

Pry Off Back Cover
3 minInsert a plastic opening pick into the seam along the bottom edge and slide around the perimeter to release the plastic latches.

Unbolt MicroSD Card Board
1 minRemove the single Phillips #00 screw holding the microSD card reader board in place.

Disconnect MicroSD Reader
2 minGently pry the microSD card board straight up from its press-fit connector on the motherboard.

Unscrew Aluminum Shield
2 minRemove the four Phillips #00 screws securing the silver metal heat shield to the chassis frame.

Lift Off Metal Shield
1 minLift the aluminum shield away from the motherboard to expose the internal heat pipe and battery.

Disconnect the Battery
2 minUse a spudger to pry the battery connector straight up out of its socket on the mainboard.

Unbolt Copper Heat Sink
2 minRemove the three Phillips #00 screws securing the copper thermal heat sink pipe over the APU.

Remove Copper Heat Sink
2 minGently lever the heat pipe up using a spudger to break the bond of the old thermal compound.

Clean Dried Thermal Paste
4 minDampen a cotton swab with 90%+ isopropyl alcohol and wipe away all old paste from the heat sink and APU cover.

Clear Fan Vents
3 minUse short bursts of compressed air to clear trapped dust from the cooling fan blades and exhaust vents.

Apply Fresh Thermal Paste
2 minPlace a small pea-sized dot of high-performance thermal paste onto the center of the APU contact surface.

Reinstall Copper Heat Sink
2 minLower the copper heat sink back into position and tighten the three Phillips #00 screws evenly.
