Step-by-step

Power off the console
1 minPress and hold the power button, then select Power Options and Turn Off.

Eject the MicroSD card
1 minOpen the kickstand cover and press down on the MicroSD card to release it from the slot.

Remove the rear tri-point screws
2 minUse a Tri-point Y00 driver to remove the four screws located on the back panel corners.

Remove the top edge screw
1 minUse a Phillips #00 driver to remove the single screw located near the exhaust vent.

Remove the bottom edge screws
2 minUnscrew the two Phillips #00 screws located on either side of the USB-C charging port.

Remove the side rail screws
2 minRemove the center Phillips #00 screw from each Joy-Con rail bracket on the left and right sides.

Pry off the back cover
2 minInsert an opening pick into the casing seam and gently lift the plastic back panel away.

Unscrew the MicroSD card reader
1 minRemove the single Phillips #00 screw holding the MicroSD card reader board in place.

Disconnect the MicroSD card reader
1 minUse a spudger to gently pry the reader press-connector straight up off the motherboard.

Remove the heat shield screws

Lift away the heat shield
1 minGrasp the metal shield by the edges and lift it straight up off the console body.

Disconnect the battery cable
1 minPry the battery connector straight up out of its motherboard socket using a plastic spudger.

Apply isopropyl alcohol
1 minApply a few drops of 90%+ isopropyl alcohol along the outer edges of the battery casing.

Wait for adhesive softening
2 minAllow two minutes for the isopropyl alcohol to penetrate and dissolve the factory adhesive.

Pry up the old battery
3 minInsert a flat plastic spudger beneath the battery edge and lever upward slowly to release the bond.

Remove the old battery
1 minLift the freed battery out of the frame and set it aside safely.

Clean the battery compartment
2 minWipe away residual adhesive from the housing well using isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free wipe.

Apply new adhesive strips
2 minPeel and apply fresh double-sided adhesive strips into the recessed battery compartment.

Install the new battery
2 minAlign the replacement battery in the tray and press down firmly to secure it to the adhesive.

Plug in the battery connector
1 minAlign the plug over the motherboard socket and press straight down until it snaps firmly into place.

Reinstall the heat shield
3 minPlace the metal heat shield back over the assembly and secure it using the six screws.
