Ubiquiti UniFi Dream Machine Special Edition Won't Turn On

Step 1
Perform a complete power drain and outlet bypass
Disconnect the C13 AC power cable and any USP-RPS DC cables from the back of the unit. Step 2
Test with a UniFi SmartPower RPS (USP-RPS)
If you have a USP-RPS in your rack, connect its proprietary DC cable to the backup power port on the UDM-SE. If the console powers on normally via the RPS but remains dark on standard AC power, the internal AC-to-DC transformer board has failed while the core mainboard remains functional.

Disconnect all network and PoE drop cables
Unplug all RJ45 Ethernet cables, SFP+ transceivers, and hard drives from the internal 3.5-inch drive bay. A shorted PoE security camera or failed HDD can trigger the UDM-SE board protection circuit and prevent the unit from initiating power delivery.
Step 4
Attempt Recovery Mode activation
With the AC power cable disconnected, hold down the front pinhole reset button using a paperclip. While keeping the button depressed, insert the AC power cable and continue holding the reset button for 15 seconds. If the LCM screen powers on and displays Recovery Mode, the power hardware is functional and the issue is software-level.

Inspect the internal fan and rear C13 socket
Examine the rear AC inlet for bent contacts or signs of electrical arcing. Listen closely when inserting the AC plug: a faint initial click or brief fan rotation indicates standby voltage is reaching the board, whereas total silence points to an open primary circuit or blown internal fuse.

Quick checks first
Before assuming your unit is dead, strip the console down to its bare essentials:
- Isolate the Power Source: Plug the UDM-SE directly into a working wall socket on a known-good circuit. Skip any rack PDU, UPS, or extension cords during initial testing.
- Remove All Connections: Unplug every Ethernet cable from ports 1–8, remove WAN SFP+ modules, and pull out the 3.5-inch NVR drive tray. If a shorted drive or PoE device was causing a shutdown lockout, the console should now power up.
- Try Another Cable: Swap the rear C13 cable with a heavy-duty 14AWG or 16AWG power cord from a desktop PC or server.

Opening the UDM-SE chassis to replace internal power supply components or work on the high-voltage AC input board involves mains electricity hazards. Because Ubiquiti rackmount gear relies on proprietary layout boards, internal board-level repair is generally not recommended for DIYers.
