Apple Vision Pro (M5) No Audio

If sound suddenly drops out or won't play on your Apple Vision Pro (M5), the issue usually stems from visionOS audio routing glitches, dirty AudioPod strap connectors, or a temporary daemon freeze.

Symptoms

  • Complete silence from both open-ear AudioPod speakers during media playback
  • Audio cuts in and out when adjusting or flexing the side head straps
  • System alert chimes play, but movie or spatial application audio is muted
  • Control Center volume slider is grayed out or frozen
  • Static, pops, or crackling immediately preceding total audio loss
  • Audio remains routed to disconnected AirPods or external Bluetooth receivers

Quick troubleshooting

  1. Step 1

Verify visionOS Audio Routing & Volume

Look up to summon the Control Center indicator, select the Control Center icon, and open the Audio/AirPlay card. Ensure 'Apple Vision Pro Speakers' is selected as the primary output and that the volume slider is turned up and unmuted.

  2. Step 2

    Force Restart the Headset

Press and hold both the Digital Crown and the Top Button simultaneously until the display turns off and the Apple logo appears. This forces visionOS to restart the audio subsystem daemons and clears hung media streams.

  3. Step 3

Unlatch and Inspect the AudioPod Strap

Disconnect the battery cable first. Use the strap release tool (or SIM ejector) to remove the affected AudioPod strap, inspect the gold-plated pogo contact pins for dust or corrosion, wipe them gently with a dry microfiber cloth, and firmly re-seat the strap.

  4. Step 4

Toggle Bluetooth and Clear Audio Devices

Navigate to Settings > Bluetooth, toggle Bluetooth off, and test if internal speakers resume playback. If using secondary audio gear, forget the paired device temporarily to eliminate persistent routing locks.

  5. Step 5

    Re-calibrate Spatial Audio

Go to Settings > Sound & Haptics > Personalized Spatial Audio and re-run the setup process. Glitches in head-tracking spatial rendering can sometimes cause spatial audio channels to collapse to silence.

Likely causes

  • Dirty or misaligned pogo pin connectors between the AudioPod strap and frame
  • visionOS spatial audio process (coreaudiod) crash or frozen media pipeline
  • Incorrect audio output target selection in visionOS Control Center
  • Bluetooth routing conflict with paired external headphones
  • Moisture or sweat ingress into the open-ear driver grilles
  • Hardware degradation in the internal ribbon cable running through the flexible strap

What's going on

Losing audio mid-session on the Apple Vision Pro (M5) breaks spatial immersion entirely. On Apple Vision hardware, open-ear spatial audio is delivered via dual-driver AudioPods integrated into the side strap mounts. Because audio data and power cross a modular quick-release mechanical joint on the frame, sound loss usually points to a physical contact interrupt, audio stream routing confusion in visionOS, or a crashed audio daemon.

Before assuming the internal amplifier or drivers have failed, working through software routing and contact pin inspections will solve the vast majority of silent headset issues.

Symptoms people notice

  • Complete Audio Cutout: No sound from either side while spatial environments, apps, or video players are running.
  • Single-Side Failure: Only the left or right AudioPod produces sound, often changing when the head strap tension is adjusted.
  • Crackling Before Cutout: Distortion or popping sounds whenever you adjust the fit of the headset.
  • UI-Only Sound: Navigation clicks and system chimes trigger, but immersive media remains completely silent.
  • Grayed Volume Slider: The volume wheel or Control Center audio slider becomes unadjustable.

Likely causes

  1. Connector Surface Contamination: Microscopic oil or debris on the AudioPod pogo pins breaking the signal connection.
  2. visionOS Daemon Freeze: The spatial audio processing pipeline hanging after switching between apps or virtual display modes.
  3. Bluetooth Audio Hijack: The M5 silently holding an active audio stream to a paired Bluetooth device or nearby Apple TV.
  4. Strap Flex Cable Stress: Physical wear or tension damage on the internal ribbon cables housed inside the side straps.
  5. Moisture Intrusion: Sweat or ambient humidity bridging speaker contacts or micro-grilles.

Quick checks first

Start with non-invasive resets before touching hardware mounts:

  • Check Control Center: Open Control Center, tap the audio output card, and verify output is manually set to internal speakers.
  • Disconnect External Accessories: Turn off any nearby paired AirPods or Bluetooth receivers that might automatically claim the audio stream.
  • Perform a Cold Reboot: Hold down the Digital Crown and Top Button together until the display goes black and the Apple logo returns. Never pull the power cable during an active update.

When it's a real hardware fault

If cleaning the gold pogo contacts and force-restarting visionOS leaves you with total silence, you may be dealing with physical hardware degradation. Flex cables integrated into the adjustable audio straps endure tension every time the headset is donned or adjusted. Damaged pins, liquid damage inside the acoustic chambers, or burnt amp modules on the mainboard require module replacement.

If moving the strap physically causes audio to pop, squeak, or drop out, the strap assembly's spring contacts or ribbon traces have reached end-of-life.

Soft resets vs board/panel work

Soft resets, contact cleaning, and strap swapping are fully safe DIY steps. However, attempting to open the sealed spatial AudioPod pods or cracking open the main M5 magnesium frame is not a DIY procedure. Unsanctioned disassembly risks damaging delicate micro-OLED panel ribbons, thermal seals, and sensor arrays.

Modular strap swaps are simple; internal logic board or panel repairs require specialized diagnostic tools and micro-soldering.

Next steps

If basic triage doesn't restore sound, test the strap on another compatible headset if available, or try swapping to a secondary audio strap. For broader headset issues, consult our smart glasses troubleshooting hub or browse hardware breakdown details in our hardware reviews section. If contact cleaning fails and the headset is under warranty, reach out directly to Apple for authorized strap or main unit service.
