iPhone On Off Button Not Working

If your iPhone power button feels stuck, mushy, or completely unresponsive, you don't have to be locked out of your phone. Learn quick software workarounds and how to diagnose hardware side button failures.

Symptoms

  • Side button feels completely flat, mushy, or stuck down without a tactile click
  • Pressing the power button does not wake or lock the iPhone screen
  • Holding the power button fails to display the 'slide to power off' slider
  • iPhone continuously restarts or gets stuck in a boot loop from a jammed button
  • Taking screenshots using the volume and side button shortcut fails intermittently
  • Screen unexpectedly locks or Siri activates continuously without touching the button

Quick troubleshooting

  1. Step 1

Remove your case and clean around the switch

Take off any protective case or screen protector bumper that covers the sides. Lightly dampen the corner of a microfiber cloth or a soft-bristled toothbrush with high-percentage isopropyl alcohol (90%+). Gently work around the edge of the power button to break up pocket lint or dried residue, then press the button repeatedly to test for movement.

  2. Step 2

Enable AssistiveTouch for screen locking and power control

Go to Settings > Accessibility > Touch > AssistiveTouch and turn it on. A floating button will appear on your screen. Tap it, select Device, and you can lock your screen or long-press 'Lock Screen' to bring up the official power-off slider without using the physical button.

  3. Step 3

Shut down and turn on the iPhone via charging cable

To turn off your phone without the button, go to Settings > General > Shut Down and drag the power slider. To turn the iPhone back on when the power button doesn't work, simply plug it into a Lightning or USB-C charging cable connected to power—it will automatically boot up.

  4. Step 4

Force restart and check for iOS software glitches

If the button click feels normal physically but iOS isn't responding, perform a forced restart. On iPhone 8 and newer, quickly press and release Volume Up, then Volume Down, then hold the Side Button (if responsive). If the button is totally non-functional, perform a full software backup and update via a computer.

  5. Step 5

Inspect the phone frame for impact damage

Hold the iPhone under bright light and look closely at the aluminum or titanium frame surrounding the power button. If you notice a dent pushing the metal directly against the button, the physical button housing may be mechanically trapped and require internal bracket adjustment.

Likely causes

  • Accumulated dirt, skin oils, or sticky liquid dried around the outer button switch
  • A thick, misaligned, or rigid protective case pinching the power button
  • Physical drop impact causing a dented metal frame that pinches the button mechanism
  • Torn, worn out, or corroded power button flex cable beneath the logic board
  • iOS system freeze preventing input registration from physical switches
  • Internal liquid damage corroding the power/volume button flex assembly contacts

What's going on

When your iPhone power button (officially called the Side Button on modern full-screen models) stops working, simple tasks like locking your display, taking a screenshot, or turning off your device suddenly become frustrating.

This issue usually stems from one of two categories: a mechanical failure (such as grime buildup, frame damage, or an aged micro-switch flex cable) or a temporary system freeze where iOS stops registering physical button inputs. Fortunately, iOS offers built-in software workarounds that allow you to fully control power and screen locking functions while you troubleshoot or repair the hardware.

Symptoms people notice

  • No mechanical click: The button feels flush against the frame and offers zero feedback when pressed.
  • Intermittent response: You have to press down forcefully at a specific angle to get the screen to turn off.
  • Spontaneous Siri activation: The phone acts as if the button is being held down constantly.
  • Inability to take screenshots: Pressing the Side Button and Volume Up simultaneously fails to capture the screen.
  • Reboot loops: If the switch is physically stuck in the down position, the iPhone may continually restart every few seconds.

Likely causes

  1. Debris and Liquid Buildup: Pocket lint, skin oils, or sticky drinks can creep into the narrow clearance gap around the button housing.
  2. Case Interference: Low-quality or overly rigid phone cases can press continuously against the button actuator or prevent it from traveling far enough.
  3. Dented Enclosure: A drop onto a hard surface can deform the metal edge around the button, locking the button mechanism into place.
  4. Failed Side Button Flex Cable: Inside the iPhone, the side button relies on a tiny metallic tactile dome soldered to a thin ribbon cable. Over thousands of clicks, this dome can collapse or tear.
  5. Internal Liquid Corrosion: Moisture entering through the button opening can corrode the micro-contacts on the power flex assembly.

Quick checks first

Before taking your phone apart or replacing parts, make sure you aren't locked out of basic phone controls:

  • Enable AssistiveTouch: Head to Settings > Accessibility > Touch > AssistiveTouch and toggle it on. Tap the virtual on-screen button, then choose Device > Lock Screen. Holding this icon acts like holding the physical power button.
  • How to turn on without the button: If you shut down your phone, simply plug it into a wall charger or computer. Every modern iPhone automatically powers on as soon as it detects charging voltage.
  • Remove bulky accessories: Strip off thick cases or heavy-duty screen protectors to confirm the accessory isn't holding the button down.

When it's a real repair

If cleaning the perimeter and taking off the case doesn't restore the tactile click, you are dealing with a physical hardware component failure.

On modern iPhones, the side button flex cable is routed beneath the logic board and battery, often sharing a single cable assembly with the flash module, rear microphone, or volume controls. Replacing this cable requires opening the device, unseating delicate screen connectors, and lifting internal components. If you are noticing similar hardware issues across your device, check our /problems hub to see if multiple components share the same underlying cable failure.

DIY vs professional repair

  • DIY Repair: If you have basic micro-repair experience, replacing an iPhone power button flex cable is manageable with the right precision screwdriver bits, suction handles, and patience. However, because the power flex cable is routed underneath crucial components, you must be careful not to damage the screen or puncture the battery during disassembly.
  • Professional Repair: If the iPhone enclosure is severely dented around the button rim, special metal-shaping tools are required to clear the clearance gap before a new button bracket will fit. If you prefer not to manage intricate ribbon cables yourself, mail-in services or an LML Experts technician can safely swap the flex assembly for you.
