Step-by-step

Power off the phone
1 minPress and hold the Power and Volume Down buttons, then tap Power Off on the screen. Ensure the device is fully shut down before proceeding.

Eject the SIM card tray
1 minInsert a SIM eject tool into the hole on the left side of the frame. Push firmly to pop out the SIM tray and remove it.

Heat the upper rear glass
2 minApply heat to the top rear glass cover using a heat gun or hair dryer for two minutes to soften the adhesive beneath.

Attach a suction cup to the glass
2 minPlace a suction cup near the bottom edge of the upper rear glass panel and pull upward to create a slight gap.

Slice the upper glass adhesive
4 minInsert an opening pick into the gap and slowly slide it along the edges of the upper back glass to separate the adhesive.

Lift away the upper back glass
1 minGently lift the upper rear panel off the phone frame and set it aside in a safe location.

Unscrew the upper motherboard cover
3 minUse a Phillips #000 screwdriver to remove all screws securing the plastic upper midframe cover.

Pry up the upper motherboard cover
2 minInsert the flat end of a spudger under the edge of the motherboard cover and lift it off the frame.

Disconnect the battery flex cable
1 minUse a plastic spudger to pry the main battery press connector straight up from the motherboard.

Disconnect the volume flex cable
1 minLocate the volume key flex cable connector on the motherboard and disconnect it with the tip of a spudger.

Remove the volume button bracket
2 minUse fine-tipped tweezers to carefully unclip and remove the small metal retaining bracket holding the volume keys.

Peel out the damaged volume flex cable
2 minInsert tweezers under the volume button flex cable and peel it off the side housing frame.

Install the replacement volume flex cable
2 minPosition the new volume flex cable into the frame recess and press down lightly to adhere it into place.

Secure the retaining bracket and reassemble
5 minSnap the metal retaining bracket over the flex cable, reconnect the volume and battery cables, and screw the motherboard cover back on.
