Apple AirPods 4 ANC One Side Not Working

If your Apple AirPods 4 ANC unit is playing audio out of only one ear, the cause is usually dirty case charging contacts, a desynced Bluetooth pairing, or an uncharged stem battery. Here is how to isolate and resolve single-bud silence.

Symptoms

  • Left or right AirPod 4 ANC produces no sound while the other plays normally
  • iOS battery widget shows a missing percentage or red exclamation mark for one earbud
  • Active Noise Cancellation fails to engage due to missing ear detection on one side
  • Charging case LED flashes amber rapidly when the silent AirPod is inserted
  • Microphone audio fails on the affected side during calls or voice memos
  • In-ear detection chime plays on one side only

Quick troubleshooting

  1. Step 1

Clean the stem and case contacts

Inspect the gold contact rings at the base of the non-working AirPod stem. Clean the contact points gently using a lint-free swab lightly dampened with 90%+ isopropyl alcohol. Use a dry swab to remove any packed lint deep inside the charging case well.

  2. Step 2

    Perform a deep charge cycle

Place both AirPods 4 ANC units into the charging case and plug it into a verified USB-C charger. Allow the set to charge undisturbed for at least 30 minutes. This resolves uneven battery depletion where one bud has dropped below the minimum boot threshold.

  3. Step 3

Forget and re-pair the Bluetooth profile

On your host device, navigate to Bluetooth settings, tap the information icon next to your AirPods 4 ANC, and select Forget This Device. Toggle Bluetooth off, restart your device, and toggle Bluetooth back on.

  4. Step 4

Perform a full case and earbud factory reset

Place both AirPods in the open case. Tap the capacitive front button on the AirPods 4 ANC case twice, then hold it down until the status light flashes amber three times and then pulses white, indicating a complete reset.

Likely causes

  • Debris or corrosion on the bottom stem contact rings or inside the case charging well
  • Bluetooth audio channel desynchronization between the host device and H2 chip
  • Deeply discharged single battery cell inside the affected earbud stem
  • Outdated firmware causing master-slave communication failure between buds
  • A damaged skin-detect sensor preventing the earbud from recognizing it is in your ear
  • Internal liquid damage or driver voice coil failure

What's going on

When one side of your Apple AirPods 4 ANC drops out, it creates an immediate disruption. Because Apple relies on dynamic primary/secondary earbud role switching within the Apple AirPods lineup, a tiny power drop or Bluetooth handshake error on one side can cause the system to drop that channel entirely.

Most single-side dropouts are digital or electrical contact glitches rather than total driver failure. Before assuming the earbud is dead, running a structured triage helps determine whether the bud is simply failing to charge, out of sync, or suffering from a hardware fault.

Symptoms people notice

  • Silent left or right earbud while the opposite side continues playing audio normally.
  • Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) or Transparency mode turns off or refuses to activate.
  • The iOS device popup shows a battery level for only one earbud or displays a red exclamation symbol over the missing side.
  • Inserting the non-working bud into the case causes the charging status LED to blink amber rapidly.
  • Media pauses repeatedly because the internal skin-detect sensors lose connection on the quiet side.

Likely causes

  1. Dirty contacts: Dust, earwax, or skin oils on the lower stem contact rings block charging current in the case.
  2. State desynchronization: The H2 headphone chip in one earbud loses link timing with its twin, dropping audio stream reception.
  3. Uneven battery decay: Microphones and ANC processing consume battery unevenly, sometimes draining one earbud completely before the user notices.
  4. Accessibility balance offset: An unintentional balance slider shift in iOS or macOS accessibility settings silences one channel.
  5. Hardware sensor failure: Liquid ingress or dropping the earbud damages the optical skin-detect sensor or internal driver.

Quick checks first

Start with basic audio balance checks. On an iPhone or iPad, go to Settings > Accessibility > Audio/Visual and ensure the Balance slider is set dead-center. It is surprisingly common for this setting to drift after software updates or hands-free calls.

Next, check the charging status. Drop the non-working AirPod into the case by itself. Watch the front LED indicator on the case. If it blinks amber repeatedly or fails to light up entirely, power is not flowing to that stem. Clean the contact points at the bottom of the AirPod stem using a dry cotton swab, then peek into the bottom of the charging well with a light to ensure no pocket lint is blocking the spring pins.

When it's a real hardware fault

If cleaning the contacts, charging for an hour, and carrying out a full reset fail to bring the status LED to life, the issue may be hardware-level. True hardware failures on the AirPods 4 ANC usually stem from:

  • Corroded contact pins: Sweat or water left on the stem corrodes the contact plating over time.
  • Failed stem battery: Lithium coin cells inside microscopic earbud bodies can short-circuit or degrade prematurely.
  • Blown driver voice coil: Physical drop impacts can sever the ultra-fine wire connections between the circuit board and the micro-driver.

Soft resets vs board/panel work

Unlike modular audio equipment or desktop gear, true micro-soldering or board repair on Apple AirPods 4 ANC is not viable for home technicians. The enclosure is sealed with structural adhesive and ultrasonic welds; opening an AirPod stem destroys the plastic casing, microphone seals, and acoustic chamber.

Troubleshooting on these devices is strictly confined to soft resets, contact restoration, software re-pairing, and firmware synchronization. If a hardware failure occurs inside the earbud shell or case logic board, individual component replacement is not DIY-friendly, and replacing the single affected earbud is the standard path forward.

Next steps

If your silent AirPod 4 ANC still fails to respond after a full reset and contact cleaning, verify its warranty or AppleCare+ coverage status using your serial number. If covered, Apple can issue a single-bud replacement. If out of warranty, individual replacement left or right buds can be paired to your existing case using the standard setup button sequence detailed in your Apple AirPods documentation.
