AirPods Pro (2nd generation) Case Won't Charge

If your AirPods Pro (2nd generation) charging case isn't holding a charge or responding to cables, lint buildup, deep discharge, or a failed charging coil could be responsible. Here is how to isolate and fix the issue.

Symptoms

  • Status LED on the front of the case does not turn on when plugged in
  • Case battery percentage remains stuck at 0% or rapidly drops
  • Case speaker fails to chime when placed on a wireless charging pad
  • AirPods inside the case fail to charge despite being seated correctly
  • Case charges via wireless MagSafe/Apple Watch puck but not wired (or vice versa)
  • iOS battery pop-up displays a red exclamation icon over the case

Quick troubleshooting

  1. Step 1

    Clean the Charging Port

Shine a bright light into the charging port on the bottom of the case. Carefully pick out compacted pocket lint and dust using a non-conductive plastic or wooden toothpick. Avoid metal tools that could bend or snap the tiny internal pins.

  2. Step 2

Isolate the Power Source and Cable

Disconnect third-party hubs or low-power USB ports. Plug the case directly into an official Apple wall charger (at least 12W to 20W) using a known-working cable, and leave it connected for at least 30 uninterrupted minutes.

  3. Step 3

    Cross-Test Wireless vs. Wired Charging

AirPods Pro (2nd gen) cases accept power via Lightning/USB-C, Qi wireless, MagSafe, and Apple Watch chargers. If wired charging fails, test an Apple Watch puck or MagSafe pad to determine if only the physical port circuit is compromised.

  4. Step 4

    Perform a Hard Controller Reset

Place both AirPods inside the case and open the lid. Press and hold the setup button on the back of the case for roughly 15 seconds until the front LED flashes amber, then white. Close the lid and attempt to charge again.

Likely causes

  • Compacted lint or debris blocking the Lightning or USB-C port contacts
  • Defective or non-compliant charging cable, adapter, or Qi charging pad
  • Deep discharge state where the internal battery protection circuit latches shut
  • Internal failure of the wireless charging receiver coil or MagSafe magnet layer
  • Bent or corroded charging pins inside the wired port or internal AirPod stem contacts
  • Firmware crash on the Apple H2 case management controller
  • Degraded internal lithium-ion pouch cell that can no longer accept charge

What's going on

When your AirPods Pro (2nd generation) charging case refuses to charge, it creates a cascade of issues. Because the case serves as both the power reservoir and the setup interface for your earbuds, a dead case means your AirPods will eventually drain down and disconnect entirely.

The second-generation case features complex power handling: it accepts current through a physical port (Lightning or USB-C depending on your sub-model), an inductive Qi coil, MagSafe alignment magnets, and Apple Watch charging pucks. If the internal logic board detects an unstable voltage, physical short, or excessive temperature, it shuts down charging to protect the lithium-ion battery. You can explore broader earbuds problems across our knowledge base if you suspect issue overlap.

Symptoms people notice

  • No LED light: The front status light stays completely dark when connected to a cable or wireless pad.
  • No audio feedback: The built-in speaker on the bottom of the 2nd-gen case fails to chime when power is applied.
  • Single-side charging: One AirPod charges inside the case while the case itself refuses to take in power from the outside.
  • Selective charging input: The case recharges on a MagSafe or Apple Watch puck, but plugging in a cable does nothing—or vice versa.
  • Intermittent connection warnings: Your iPhone shows the charging animation briefly before flashing a red exclamation mark or disconnecting.

Likely causes

  1. Port Contamination: Pocket lint gets forced into the narrow port, creating an insulating layer between the cable pins and internal contacts.
  2. Low-Wattage Lockout / Deep Discharge: If the case sat fully drained for weeks, standard 5W chargers may fail to kick-start the battery protection circuit.
  3. Damaged Port Contacts: Liquid ingress or aggressive plugging can corrode or snap the delicate gold-plated pins inside the connector.
  4. Wireless Coil Misalignment or Failure: Internal solder joints linking the wireless receiving coil to the main board can fracture after drops.
  5. H2 Case Controller Freeze: Firmware glitches in the case's controller can halt power handshake routines until reset.

Quick checks first

Before assuming severe hardware failure, perform these immediate triage steps:

  • Inspect the port: Use a flashlight to look inside the port. If you cannot see the solid metallic backwall of the connector, there is lint trapped inside.
  • Swap power bricks: Switch from a laptop USB port or low-output brick to a high-output 20W USB-C wall charger.
  • Try an Apple Watch charger: The AirPods Pro 2 case uniquely supports Apple Watch charging pucks. Testing this helps narrow down whether the issue is isolated to the bottom port or the overall battery system.
  • Clean internal stem contacts: Check inside the deep wells where the AirPods sit. Alcohol-dampened cotton swabs can clean oxidized contacts at the bottom of the case.

When it's a real hardware fault

If your case does not respond to multiple verified charging cables, refuses wireless charging on known-good pads, and fails to illuminate during a 15-second setup button reset, you are likely facing an internal hardware failure:

  • Swollen or exhausted battery: Lithium-ion pouch cells inside charging cases lose capacity over hundreds of charge cycles and eventually fail to hold current.
  • Corroded logic board: Sweating during workouts or liquid exposure inside pockets can cause corrosion around the power ICs.
  • Physical pin damage: A bent connector pin inside the Lightning or USB-C port short-circuits incoming current, triggering immediate safety cutoffs.

Soft resets vs board/panel work

A soft reset via the rear setup button resolves controller hangs and pairing sync errors. However, unlike larger electronics, Apple seals the AirPods Pro 2 case with heavy ultrasonic welds and industrial adhesive.

Disassembling the case to replace internal power ICs, the wireless coil, or the internal lithium pouch cell is inherently destructive to the outer plastic housing. For almost all users, opening the case shell is impractical and poses a thermal hazard. If basic port cleaning and button resets do not recover power functionality, hardware repair typically requires replacing the case shell assembly.
