Step-by-step

Power off the device
1 minPress and hold the Power button on the right edge of the Galaxy S1. Tap Power Off on the screen and wait for the phone to shut down completely.

Remove the back cover
1 minInsert your fingernail or a plastic opening pick into the pry notch near the top corner. Pry up to unclip and remove the back cover.

Remove the battery
1 minGrasp the fingernail recess at the bottom of the battery. Lift the battery up and out of the bay.

Remove the SIM card
1 minPress the SIM card slightly inward to release its lock. Slide the card out of its slot.

Remove the microSD card
1 minPush the microSD card inward until you hear a click. Release it and pull the card straight out.

Unscrew the rear midframe
2 minUse a Phillips #00 screwdriver to remove the seven screws securing the rear housing to the front chassis.

Pry off the midframe
3 minInsert a plastic opening tool into the seam along the side of the housing. Pry around the perimeter to release the plastic internal clips.

Separate midframe from body
1 minLift the plastic midframe straight off the chassis and set it aside.

Disconnect display flex cable
2 minUse the flat end of a spudger to pry the display press connector off the motherboard.

Disconnect touch digitizer cable
2 minPry up the digitizer ribbon cable connector located near the top left of the motherboard.

Disconnect soft key flex cable
2 minGently disconnect the capacitive soft key ribbon connector near the bottom of the motherboard.

Unscrew the motherboard
1 minRemove the single Phillips #00 screw holding the motherboard to the frame near the top.

Lift out the motherboard
2 minCarefully tilt the motherboard up from the top edge and lift it out of the front housing.

Remove earpiece speaker
2 minUse tweezers to lift the earpiece speaker and sensor module out of its recess at the top of the frame.

Heat front glass display
3 minApply heat to the front glass using a heat gun for 2 minutes to soften the adhesive around the display perimeter.

Attach suction cup
1 minPress a suction cup firmly onto the upper portion of the glass screen.

Pry up screen glass
2 minPull up on the suction cup to create a small gap between the glass and frame, then insert a plastic opening pick.

Slice screen adhesive
3 minSlide the plastic pick around all four edges of the screen assembly to slice through the adhesive.

Remove broken screen assembly
2 minCarefully guide the flex cables through the frame slot as you lift the screen assembly off the frame.

Clean frame adhesive residue
4 minScrape off remaining old adhesive from the inner frame ledge using a spudger and isopropyl alcohol.

Apply fresh display adhesive
3 minLay pre-cut double-sided adhesive strips along the edges of the front frame.

Thread replacement screen cables
2 minFeed the display and digitizer flex cables of the new screen assembly through the slot in the front frame.

Seat replacement screen
2 minAlign the screen assembly with the frame edges and press down firmly to secure it to the fresh adhesive.

Reinstall earpiece speaker
1 minPlace the earpiece speaker assembly back into its top slot in the front frame.

Reinstall motherboard
2 minPlace the motherboard into the frame housing and secure it with the single Phillips screw.

Reconnect internal flex cables
3 minPress the display, digitizer, and soft key ribbon connectors firmly onto their motherboard sockets.

Reassemble rear midframe and battery
3 minSnap the midframe on, tighten the 7 rear screws, reinsert the SIM card and battery, and replace the back cover.
