Step-by-step

Turn off the phone
1 minPress and hold the power button, then tap Power Off to completely shut down the device before starting.

Eject the SIM tray
1 minInsert a SIM eject tool into the hole next to the SIM card tray on the side of the phone and push until it pops out.

Heat the rear cover
2 minApply a heated iOpener or heat gun to the edges of the back cover for two minutes to soften the underlying adhesive.

Attach a suction cup
1 minPlace a suction cup near the bottom edge of the back cover and pull upward firmly to create a small gap.

Insert an opening pick
1 minSlide a thin plastic opening pick into the seam created between the back cover and the frame.

Slice the rear adhesive
4 minSlide the pick along all four edges of the phone to cut through the perimeter adhesive, reheating as necessary.

Gently lift the back cover
2 minRotate the back cover open from the left side, taking care not to yank or damage the attached fingerprint sensor flex cable.

Disconnect the fingerprint sensor
1 minUse a plastic spudger to gently pop the fingerprint reader ribbon cable off its motherboard connector.

Remove top cover screws
3 minUnscrew all Phillips #00 screws securing the upper plastic motherboard shield to the frame.

Detach the motherboard cover
2 minUse tweezers or a spudger to lift and remove the upper motherboard cover from the phone.

Disconnect the battery press connector
1 minPry the battery connector straight up from its motherboard socket using the flat end of a spudger.

Soften the battery adhesive
3 minApply a few drops of high-concentration isopropyl alcohol around the edges of the battery to loosen the factory glue.

Pry up the old battery
4 minInsert a plastic card or flat spudger underneath the battery and slowly lever it up until it releases from the frame.

Clean adhesive residue
2 minScrape away remaining glue from the battery recess using a spudger and clean the surface with isopropyl alcohol.

Apply new battery adhesive
2 minPlace custom double-sided battery adhesive strips into the empty battery compartment.

Seat the replacement battery
2 minAlign the new battery into the housing and press down evenly to secure it against the fresh adhesive strips.

Reconnect the battery cable
1 minAlign and press the battery connector straight into its motherboard socket until it clicks into place.

Reinstall the motherboard cover
2 minPosition the plastic motherboard shield back over the top section of the device.
