Safety
- Discharge the iPhone battery below 25% before starting the repair to prevent thermal runaway if punctured.

Step-by-step

Power Down Phone
1 minTurn off your iPhone XS completely before beginning any disassembly to avoid electrical short circuits.

Remove Pentalobe Screws
2 minUse a P2 Pentalobe screwdriver to remove the two 6.8 mm screws located on either side of the Lightning port.

Heat the Display Edges
2 minApply a heat gun or hair dryer to the bottom edge of the phone for two minutes to soften the display adhesive.

Attach Suction Cup
1 minPress a suction cup firmly onto the lower half of the front glass, just above the Lightning port.

Pry Display Open
3 minPull up firmly on the suction cup while inserting a plastic opening pick into the seam between the glass and the frame.

Slice Perimeter Adhesive
3 minSlide the opening pick around the bottom and left sides of the phone to cut through the remaining adhesive seal.

Open Display Book-wise
1 minSwing the display open from the left edge like a book, taking care not to strain the ribbon cables on the right.

Unscrew Logic Board Bracket
2 minUse a Tri-point Y000 screwdriver to remove the three screws holding the lower logic board metal cover in place.

Disconnect Battery
1 minUse the flat end of a spudger to gently pry the battery connector straight up out of its socket on the logic board.

Unscrew Speaker Bracket
2 minRemove the three Y000 screws securing the grounding bracket over the lower speaker assembly.

Lift Out Speaker Assembly
2 minGently pry up and lift the lower speaker out of the case to reveal the underlying Taptic Engine.

Disconnect Taptic Engine
1 minPry the Taptic Engine flex cable connector straight up from the logic board using a spudger.

Remove Taptic Engine Screws
2 minRemove the one Y000 screw and two standoff screws securing the Taptic Engine to the rear case.

Lift Out Old Taptic Engine
1 minUse tweezers to carefully lift the faulty Taptic Engine straight up and out of the housing.

Install New Taptic Engine
3 minPlace the replacement Taptic Engine into the chassis, secure its screws, and press its ribbon cable into the socket.
