Step-by-step

Power off the iPhone
1 minPress and hold the Sleep/Wake button, then slide the power icon to turn off the device completely.

Remove bottom Pentalobe screws
2 minUse a P2 Pentalobe screwdriver to remove the two 3.6 mm screws next to the Lightning charging port.

Attach the suction cup
1 minPlace a suction cup onto the lower portion of the screen, just above the Home button.

Pry open the front panel
3 minPull up on the suction cup while inserting a plastic prying tool under the bottom edge to unclip the screen assembly.

Disconnect the battery cable
1 minUse the edge of a spudger to pry the battery connector straight up off the logic board socket.

Remove the display cable bracket
3 minUnscrew the five Phillips #000 screws holding down the display cable shield and lift the bracket out.

Disconnect the display assembly
3 minPry up the front camera, digitizer, LCD, and home button flex cables to separate the display from the rear case.

Eject the SIM card tray
1 minInsert a SIM eject tool or paperclip into the hole beside the SIM tray to remove it.

Remove the upper logic board brackets
3 minUnscrew the Phillips screws securing the top metal brackets covering the camera and antenna connectors.

Disconnect logic board connectors
2 minUse a spudger to disconnect the rear camera cable, antenna cable, and volume/power switch flex cable.

Remove the logic board
3 minRemove the remaining logic board screws and carefully lift the board out of the rear case assembly.

Unscrew volume switch brackets
2 minRemove the Phillips screws holding the internal metal brackets for the volume buttons against the frame.

Peel up the volume flex cable
2 minCarefully insert tweezers under the volume button switch flex cable to peel it away from the side casing adhesive.

Install the new volume flex cable
3 minAlign the replacement volume flex cable over the mounting pins and press down firmly to set the adhesive.

Secure the volume brackets
2 minReposition the metal volume switch brackets and tighten the Phillips screws to hold the buttons in place.
