Step-by-step

Unscrew the battery compartment
2 minUse a Phillips #0 screwdriver to loosen the captive screw on the battery door. Lift the door away from the rear casing.

Disconnect the battery pack
2 minLift the battery out of its bay and unplug the white cable connector from the board. Set the battery aside safely.

Remove the screw covers
3 minUse a spudger to peel off the rubber screw covers on the back housing. Place them on a magnetic mat so they do not get lost.

Unscrew the rear housing
4 minRemove the Y0 tri-point screws securing the outer shell together. Keep the screws organized by size.

Separate the housing halves
3 minGently pry open the rear casing using a plastic opening tool. Do not pull it away completely yet as internal ribbon cables are still attached.

Disconnect the shoulder button cables
3 minDisconnect the left and right shoulder button flex cables from the motherboard using precision tweezers. Lift away the rear housing.

Unscrew the motherboard shield
4 minRemove the Phillips screws securing the metal EMI shield over the main circuit board. Lift the shield straight up to remove it.

Disconnect the drive flex cable
2 minFlip up the locking ZIF lever on the optical drive ribbon connector using a spudger. Slide the ribbon cable out of its socket.

Unscrew the optical drive assembly
3 minRemove the mounting screws holding the drive mechanism bracket to the inner frame. Lift the bracket clear of the alignment posts.

Remove the disc drive module
4 minLift the optical disc drive assembly out of the chassis. Swap the original drive board to the replacement drive if required for hardware pairing.

Clean the laser lens
3 minGently wipe the optical laser lens with a cotton swab lightly dampened in high-concentration isopropyl alcohol. Allow it to air dry completely.

Install the optical drive
4 minLower the new or cleaned optical drive module into position. Reinsert the drive flex cable into the connector and flip the ZIF lever down to lock it.
