XGIMI Projector No Picture But Has Sound

If your XGIMI projector is producing clear audio but displaying a completely black wall, the fault ranges from a simple HDCP HDMI handshake freeze to an LED light engine driver failure.

Symptoms

  • Android TV navigation sounds or startup chimes play, but no image projects
  • Power LED turns solid white/blue and cooling fans run normally
  • Audio plays continuously from connected HDMI devices like Apple TV or Fire Stick without video
  • A faint XGIMI logo appears for two seconds on boot, then instantly fades to black
  • Faint shapes are visible on the wall if you shine a secondary light source at the projection area
  • Remote control responds with system sound cues when adjusting volume or pressing home

Quick troubleshooting

  1. Step 1

Perform an Optical Power Drain (Cold Reset)

Unplug the power adapter directly from the wall and disconnect all HDMI devices. Hold down the physical power button on the XGIMI unit for 20 seconds to discharge residual power on the driver board. Plug only the power supply back in and boot up to see if the internal XGIMI menu appears.

  2. Step 2

Isolate Internal UI vs External HDMI Sources

Press the Home or Settings button on your XGIMI remote and listen for button clicks. If you hear menu clicks but see nothing, the issue is inside the projector's video pathway. If you hear streaming audio from an HDMI stick but CAN see the native XGIMI home screen when pressing Home, the problem is an HDCP handshake error over the HDMI port.

  3. Step 3

    Clear HDCP and Port Stalls

If the issue occurs on HDMI, unplug the HDMI cable from both the projector and the source device. Set your source device (Roku, Apple TV, PC) output resolution to 1080p fixed standard refresh rate (60Hz) on another TV before reconnecting it to the XGIMI unit.

  4. Step 4

Perform an OS Recovery Blind Reset

For software freezes on Android TV models, unplug the power lead, hold down the 'OK' and 'Back' buttons on the remote (or physical power button depending on your Horizon, Halo, or Mogo model), and plug power back in. Hold until fan speeds change to enter recovery mode, then restart the system.

Likely causes

  • HDCP copy-protection handshake failure between the external media player and XGIMI OS
  • Android TV / Google TV graphics compositor crash or frozen display driver process
  • Faulty LED/Laser light source driver circuit on the mainboard
  • Thermal protection lock engaging the lamp/LED circuit due to clogged air intakes
  • Loose or oxidized ribbon cable between the mainboard and the DMD (Digital Micromirror Device) chip
  • Failed LED light module or optical engine assembly

What's going on

When an XGIMI projector produces full, clear audio but fails to project an image, it usually indicates that the main logic board, operating system, and power delivery circuits are healthy. The device is successfully booting, running Android TV or Google TV, and decoding audio streams.

The breakdown is happening exclusively in the video path. In XGIMI's smart LED and laser lineups (such as the Horizon, Halo, Elfin, and Mogo series), this path consists of the graphics processor, an HDCP authentication protocol, an LED/Laser driver board, and the DMD (DLP micro-mirror) optical engine. Isolating whether the light engine is turned off due to a software state or a physical hardware fault is your first priority.

Symptoms people notice

  • Audio cues, voice assistant prompts, and UI click sounds respond normally to remote input.
  • The cooling fans spin up to their standard operating noise level without ramping into high-speed emergency mode.
  • The power LED indicator shows a stable operating state (typically solid white or blue) rather than an error blink sequence.
  • The projection remains pitch black, or shows a super-faint glowing background without graphics or text.
  • The projector displays the XGIMI boot logo for a few seconds before the light engine suddenly shuts down, leaving audio running.

Likely causes

  1. HDCP Copy-Protection Glitch: Streamed content from Netflix, Prime, or external devices hangs during digital handshake negotiation, blacking out video while leaving PCM/Dolby audio active.
  2. Android TV Display Driver Crash: The core operating system graphics stack has halted, failing to feed a signal to the optical display interface.
  3. LED Driver Board Thermal Cutoff: Dust buildup or sensor drift triggers a safety cut-off that kills power to the primary LED array while keeping the system board running.
  4. Blown LED Power Channel: A component on the internal driver board that supplies high voltage to the Red, Green, or Blue LEDs has failed.
  5. DMD / Optical Engine Flex Cable Dislodged: Internal physical shock (like a minor drop or vibration) knocked the high-speed video ribbon cable free from its socket.

Quick checks first

Before assuming your light engine is dead, run through these basic checks:

  • Test native audio vs source audio: Press the shortcut button on the remote to invoke Google Assistant or open the native XGIMI settings menu. If you can hear navigation clicks, attempt to blindly trigger a firmware update or factory reset.
  • Check the optical path for physical obstructions: Ensure auto-focus sensors or automatic keystone cameras are not covered, and make sure any mechanical lens covers have retracted fully.
  • Bypass HDMI switches and soundbars: Connect source devices directly to the projector's HDMI 1 port using a high-speed 18Gbps or 48Gbps HDMI cable.
  • Inspect for thermal overload: Verify the intake and exhaust vents on the casing are clear of dust accumulation. If the projector was running in an enclosed space, let it sit unplugged for 30 minutes.

When it's a real hardware fault

If you have performed a complete power drain and attempted blind resets without seeing a single flicker from the lens, you are likely dealing with an internal hardware fault:

  • Failed LED/Laser Driver: The driver sub-board converts main power down to precise currents for the projection lamps. If this board fails, the projector stays on, fan spins, audio plays, but the light source remains completely dark.
  • DMD Board Failure: The DLP chip requires high-speed data from the main board. If the chip or its processing board suffers a voltage spike, video output ceases instantly.
  • Optical Engine Degradation: Solid-state light engines in portable projectors are sealed units. If an internal diode shorts out, the motherboard cuts power to the entire optical block to prevent further electrical damage.

Soft resets vs board/panel work

Fixing software glitches, HDCP handshake bugs, and bad input resolution settings can easily be done at home through power cycles and menu resets. Soft resets clear stuck video buffer states and resolve up to half of all suddenly blanked screens.

However, opening up an XGIMI projector to work on internal power boards, LED driver lines, or DLP optical assemblies is not recommended for DIY repair. Modern compact DLP projectors use tightly packed flex cables, sensitive optical alignment pathways, and integrated thermal management blocks. Attempting to manually replace components on the mainboard or open the sealed optical engine often introduces dust into the light path or damages delicate ribbon connectors.

Next steps

If basic troubleshooting fails to restore the picture:

  1. Check if your device is still under manufacturer warranty by visiting our XGIMI brand page for support links and model specifications.
  2. If out of warranty, evaluate whether replacing the internal optical driver or mainboard is economically practical compared to upgrading—you can explore alternative hardware options and performance comparisons in our projector reviews section.
  3. Keep the unit disconnected from power if you suspect an internal short or component burn.
