Ubiquiti Router No WAN / Internet Light
When your Ubiquiti gateway or router shows no WAN link light, the issue usually stems from an ISP MAC lock, autonegotiation failure, or a physical port issue. Here is how to fix it.

- WAN port link LED on the Ubiquiti gateway is completely unlit
- UniFi Controller reports 'Primary WAN Disconnected' or 'No Internet'
- Modem or ONT link light remains unlit on the connected port

Quick troubleshooting
Step 1
Perform a sequenced power cycle
Disconnect power from both your ISP modem/ONT and the Ubiquiti router. Wait at least 5 minutes so the ISP upstream server releases its MAC/ARP lease. Power on the modem first, let it connect completely, and then boot the Ubiquiti gateway.
Step 2
Test with a known-good Cat6 patch cable
Swap out the Ethernet cable running between the modem and the WAN port with a verified Cat6 cable. Inspect the pins inside the router's RJ45 port to make sure none are bent, corroded, or obstructed.

Force the WAN port link speed manually
Access your UniFi Network Controller or EdgeOS admin interface via local LAN. Navigate to your internet connection settings and change the WAN port speed from Auto-Negotiate to a fixed speed like 1 Gbps FDX.

Verify ISP VLAN tagging and MAC settings
Check if your internet service provider requires VLAN tagging on the WAN connection (such as VLAN 201 for fiber ISPs). Re-enter the proper VLAN ID under the WAN interface settings in your controller.

Remap WAN to a secondary port
If your device supports multi-WAN (such as a UDM Pro or EdgeRouter), remap the primary WAN interface to an alternate RJ45 or SFP+ port in the software settings to bypass a faulty physical port.

- Damaged or out-of-spec Ethernet patch cable (Cat5e/Cat6 wiring fault)
- Port auto-negotiation failure between Ubiquiti WAN port and modem
- Missing or misconfigured ISP VLAN tagging (e.g., VLAN 201 requirement)
- Incorrect port profile assignment in UniFi Network or EdgeOS
- Hardware damage on the WAN PHY chip or RJ45 magnetics from a power surge
What's going on
When a Ubiquiti gateway (such as a UniFi Dream Machine, USG, or EdgeRouter) shows no WAN link light, the layer-1 physical Ethernet connection or layer-2 DHCP handshake between your router and the upstream ISP modem/ONT has failed. Ubiquiti hardware requires strict signal integrity and link negotiation. If the physical LED is completely dark, the router is not detecting an electrical carrier signal from the upstream modem.

- Ethernet PHY chip failure: A power surge over the incoming line damaged the physical interface transceiver.
Quick checks first
Start by executing a clean reboot sequence. Turn off both the ISP modem/ONT and your Ubiquiti gateway, leaving them unpowered for 5 minutes. This delay forces the provider's node to release old ARP bindings. Power up the modem first, wait until its WAN/Internet lights freeze solid, and then turn on your router.
Next, check the Ethernet patch cable. Ubiquiti ports are sensitive to pin alignment and cable quality; even minor wire degradation can prevent line detection. Swap in a fresh Cat6 cable. When it's a real hardware fault

Soft resets vs board/panel work
Performing soft resets, modifying WAN settings, and updating firmware via recovery mode are straightforward software actions. However, micro-soldering board-level components—like replacing Ethernet transformer magnetics or Ethernet PHY ICs—is not advisable for typical users due to multi-layer board trace fragility.
