Ubiquiti Router HDMI Not Working

If the HDMI output on your Ubiquiti router, gateway, or UniFi console shows a black screen or drops video, EDID handshakes and port banking limits are often the cause. Here is how to diagnose and fix it.

Symptoms

  • Connected monitor or TV displays 'No Signal' or stays completely black
  • Ubiquiti logo appears during startup, then screen goes black when UniFi OS loads
  • Local video stream flickers, stutters, or drops out every few minutes
  • Display output locks up into a distorted or incorrect resolution
  • Audio or eARC feed fails to pass through attached AV equipment
  • HDMI output stops working after high network traffic load or SFP+ port activity

Quick troubleshooting

  1. Step 1

    Perform a cold power cycle and cable reseat

    Disconnect the HDMI cable from both the Ubiquiti unit and the monitor. Power down the Ubiquiti console completely by pulling the power cord for 60 seconds. Reattach a verified Premium High-Speed HDMI cable directly to the display before plugging the power cord back in.

    Bypass AV receivers, splitters, and eARC pass-throughs

    Connect your Ubiquiti hardware directly to a basic 1080p computer monitor using a single direct HDMI cable. Intermediate AV receivers and eARC switches often corrupt the EDID metadata handshake required by UniFi embedded Linux video drivers.

  • Using an unshielded or legacy HDMI cable unable to handle full signal bandwidth
  • Port banking or internal PCIe bus saturation between network interfaces and display ICs

  • Thermal throttling on the gateway mainboard affecting the display controller
  • Hardware damage to the HDMI port pins or blown ESD protection diodes

What's going on

When you hook a display directly to an HDMI port on a Ubiquiti gateway, router, or UniFi OS console, you expect an immediate console feed or video matrix. When the screen sits on "No Signal," it creates immediate frustration.

Ubiquiti hardware relies on lightweight Linux display controllers to drive local video interfaces. Unlike standard consumer media players, these enterprise-focused boards strictly require predictable EDID (Extended Display Identification Data) handshakes from the connected panel. If the monitor does not report its capabilities properly during boot—or if internal bus traffic on shared port banks causes a timing glitch—the video driver simply disables the port output to protect system stability.

Symptoms people notice

  • Boot splash fade: The Ubiquiti boot screen appears briefly, but as soon as UniFi OS finishes mounting drivers, the screen drops to black.
  • Persistent 'No Signal': The monitor goes straight to sleep mode, sensing zero sync pulse from the HDMI port.
  • Resolution locked at low default: The video displays, but at an unreadable, distorted low resolution.
  • Intermittent signal drops: Video works fine until heavy local network routing or camera streaming causes the screen to drop out.
  • No audio over eARC: Video renders, but audio passthrough to an external sound system fails entirely.

Likely causes

  1. EDID Negotiation Failure: The display and the Ubiquiti Linux framebuffer cannot agree on a mutually supported refresh rate or resolution.
  2. Port Banking & Bus Saturation: On certain multi-function Ubiquiti chassis, video controller chips share PCIe lanes or power rails with SFP+ and high-density Ethernet banks. Under peak network loads, signal integrity on the video line can degrade.
  3. Cable Bandwidth Constraints: Older HDMI 1.4 cables often fail when trying to negotiate native 4K display feeds or high-bitrate live view matrices.
  4. OS Configuration Glitches: A recent UniFi OS update may have reset the local display feature flag to disabled.
  5. Hardware ESD/Overvoltage Damage: Hot-plugging HDMI cables while equipment is ungrounded can blow small surface-mount ESD diodes near the port.

Quick checks first

Before assuming the internal HDMI controller is dead, eliminate basic handshake and cable issues:

  • Direct connection: Remove all HDMI switches, matrix routers, and eARC extraction hubs. Go straight from the Ubiquiti unit to a monitor.
  • Try a monitor instead of a TV: Commercial computer monitors handle tight EDID specs much better than consumer smart TVs.
  • Cold restart order: Always turn the monitor on first, select the HDMI input, and then boot the Ubiquiti hardware so the console detects the display during driver initialization.
  • Check web console: Log into your router via web browser or mobile app to verify system health and check if network functions are running normally behind the display blackout.

When it's a real hardware fault

If you have tried multiple high-speed cables and direct-connected 1080p monitors with zero output, you may be dealing with a hardware-level board fault.

Common physical points of failure include broken internal solder pads on the HDMI connector from heavy cable strain, or a shorted display transmitter IC on the motherboard. If the unit was subjected to a power surge or hot-plugged without proper grounding, thermal stress or voltage spikes can burn out the protection filtering lines immediately behind the port.

Soft resets vs board/panel work

Soft resets—such as restarting UniFi OS via SSH or performing a factory reset via the web GUI—can resolve software-level display driver hangups and clear corrupted resolution profiles.

However, if the physical HDMI port pins are damaged or the internal transmitter chip has failed, software changes will not bring the screen back. Surface-mount board repair on enterprise networking gear requires micro-soldering tools, hot-air rework stations, and schematics to replace blown ICs. For most home and office environments, this micro-soldering work is not practical as a DIY project.
