TP-Link Router No WAN / Internet Light

If your TP-Link router's Internet LED is solid orange, amber, or completely unlit, your local network is isolated from the provider. Here is how to resolve cable negotiation failures, ISP MAC address locks, and DHCP handshake drops.

Symptoms

  • The Internet LED (globe or icon) is solid orange or amber
  • The WAN/Internet light stays dark despite an Ethernet cable being plugged in
  • TP-Link Tether app displays 'WAN Port Unplugged' or 'No Internet Connection'
  • Devices connect to Wi-Fi normally but show 'Connected, no internet'
  • The web management page (tplinkwifi.net) shows WAN IP as 0.0.0.0
  • Internet drops back to an amber light minutes after rebooting the modem

Quick troubleshooting

  1. Step 1

    Perform a strict sequential power cycle

    Unplug both your ISP modem/ONT and your TP-Link router from power. Wait at least 5 full minutes so your ISP releases the old DHCP lease. Plug in the modem first and wait until all its lights stabilize, then power on the TP-Link router and wait 2 minutes for the handshake to complete.

  2. Step 2

    Inspect and swap the WAN Ethernet cable

    Disconnect the cable running from your modem into the TP-Link WAN port (often colored blue or yellow). Check the RJ45 plastic clip for damage and swap in a known-working Cat6 cable. Ensure it clicks firmly into both ports; an incomplete physical pin connection keeps the WAN light off.

    Clone your computer or old router's MAC address

    Log into your router interface by navigating to tplinkwifi.net or 192.168.0.1 in a browser. Go to Network > MAC Clone, select 'Clone Current Computer MAC Address' (using the PC that previously worked directly on the modem), and save settings. ISPs frequently lock internet access to the first recognized MAC address.

    Verify WAN Connection Type and IP settings

    Inside the TP-Link admin panel under Basic > Internet or Advanced > Network > Internet, confirm the WAN Connection Type is set to Dynamic IP unless your ISP explicitly assigned a Static IP or PPPoE credentials.   • Incorrect VLAN ID tags required by fiber optic ISPs (e.g., CenturyLink/Frontier)
  • WAN port hardware failure caused by a power surge or electrical storm

What's going on

When the Internet light on a TP-Link router fails to turn green (or white, depending on your model series), the router is telling you it cannot establish an active connection with your Internet Service Provider (ISP).

TP-Link routers use distinct LED states to pinpoint where the connection chain is breaking. A completely dark WAN light means the physical layer is down—the router doesn't even sense an electrical link from the cable plugged into the WAN port. An orange or amber light means physical link exists, but the router failed the protocol handshake (it isn't getting an IP address or authentication response from the ISP modem or ONT).

  • The internet LED (represented by a globe or 'i' symbol) stays solid amber, orange, or off.
  • Local Wi-Fi connections work, but devices warn that there is no internet access.
  • The TP-Link Tether app warns that the WAN port is disconnected or internet is unavailable.
  • Navigating to tplinkwifi.net shows a 0.0.0.0 address under the WAN IP status field.
  • The connection temporarily fixes itself for 30 seconds after a reset, then immediately turns orange again.

Likely causes

  1. ISP MAC Address Locking: Many cable providers bind your service to the MAC address of the device connected when the modem booted up. Connecting a new TP-Link router without releasing that lock causes an orange WAN light.
  2. Physical Cable or Port Failure: Faulty RJ45 connectors, bent copper pins, or an unshielded Cat5 cable can prevent gigabit handshakes.
  3. DHCP Handshake Timeouts: The modem fails to issue an IP address to the TP-Link router dynamic request during initial boot-up.
  4. Missing VLAN Tagging: Fiber-to-the-home connections often require specific VLAN IDs (like VLAN 201) configured on the TP-Link WAN interface before traffic routes properly.
  5. Surge Damage: A nearby thunderstorm can send a voltage spike through coaxial cables or ethernet drop lines, destroying the small Ethernet isolation transformer chip on the TP-Link mainboard.

Quick checks first

Before digging into deep router settings or buying replacement gear, run through these quick isolation tests:

  • The Direct PC Test: Unplug the Ethernet cable from the TP-Link WAN port and plug it directly into a laptop's Ethernet port. If the laptop gets internet, the issue is router settings/MAC locking. If the laptop also gets no connection, the issue is your modem or ISP feed.
  • Swap Port Pins: Plug the cable into one of the local LAN ports (1–4) temporarily. If the LAN light illuminates but the WAN port stays dark when plugged in, the WAN port itself may have physical pin or circuit damage.
  • Verify Power Sync: Ensure you don't power both devices on simultaneously; modems take 2–3 minutes to register with the headend before they will respond to the router's IP request.

When it's a real hardware fault

If you have verified that another device receives internet directly from the modem, but the TP-Link router's WAN LED remains completely dark regardless of the cable used, the physical Ethernet interface on the router board may be blown.

Ethernet ports rely on magnetics and PHY transceiver chips directly behind the jack. Voltage spikes entering through an outdoor line can easily blow these surface-mount chips without leaving visible exterior burn marks. If a factory reset does not restore port link detection, the WAN PHY circuit is burnt.

Soft resets vs board/panel work

Most TP-Link internet light issues stem from soft config mismatches—such as DHCP timing out or MAC address restrictions—which are easily cleared via soft resets, firmware updates, or settings tweaks inside the Tether app.

However, opening up a home router to solder a replacement WAN port or swap blown surface-mount capacitors is rarely practical or economical. Consumer routers use highly integrated multi-layer PCB designs.
