Speaker Sound Distorted / Crackling

Audio distortion or constant crackling usually stems from a damaged driver cone, an overdriven amplifier, dirty volume pots, or poor signal cables. Here is how to isolate the cause and restore clean sound.

  1. Step 1

    Isolate the input source and swap physical cables

    Disconnect your current audio cable and try a brand-new AUX, RCA, or optical cable on a completely different source device. If the crackling stops immediately, the original cable had internal wire fatigue or poor shielding picking up electromagnetic noise.

    Adjust gain staging to eliminate digital clipping

  3. Dirty potentiometers: Dust accumulation inside rotary controls creates poor electrical contact along the carbon track.
  4. Amplifier overdrive (Clipping): Sending a signal that exceeds the maximum output voltage of the amp flattens the sound waves into square waves, producing harsh distortion.
  5. Faulty audio cables: Frayed conductors or corroded connectors on AUX/RCA lines introduce stray ground hum and pops.

Start by checking your gain staging. Set your media player or phone volume to roughly 80% and use the speaker's hardware dial to control the final listening level. If you are using Bluetooth, move the speaker at least five feet away from Wi-Fi routers or USB 3.0 hubs, which frequently broadcast interfering radiation in the 2.4GHz band.

Try bypassing any external DACs, mixers, or audio interfaces.
