Sony TV Wi-Fi Not Connecting
Is your Sony BRAVIA TV refusing to connect to Wi-Fi or constantly dropping the network? Here is how to fix Android TV network stack glitches, time-sync errors, and Wi-Fi chip faults.
Symptoms
- Wi-Fi toggle automatically switches itself back to OFF in settings
- TV shows 'Connected, no internet' error on the home screen
- Wi-Fi network list appears blank or continuously scans without loading
- Saved Wi-Fi password is forgotten after putting the TV into standby
- Streaming apps throw connection errors while other home devices work fine
- IP address assignment stays stuck on 'Obtaining IP address...'
Quick troubleshooting
Step 1
Perform a Sony Full System Restart
Do not just press the power button to enter standby. Hold the Power button on your Sony remote for 5 seconds until the 'Restart' prompt appears, or unplug the TV from the wall for a full 60 seconds. This forces the underlying Google TV network stack to re-initialize.
Step 2
Fix System Date & Time Desync
Sony TVs rely on accurate network time for SSL authentication. Go to Settings > System > Date & Time. Set 'Automatic date & time' to 'Use network-provided time', or set it manually if it shows a incorrect date in the past.
Step 3
Forget Network and Re-authenticate
Navigate to Settings > Network & Internet, select your Wi-Fi network, and choose 'Forget network'. Restart the TV, select your SSID again, and re-enter your password to generate a clean DHCP lease.
Step 4
Toggle Simple IP Control & IP v6
In Network Settings, disable IPv6 if your ISP does not fully support it on smart TVs. Next, navigate to Settings > Network > Network Setup > Simple IP Control and turn it ON to prevent background network sleep crashes.
Step 5
Reboot Router and Adjust Band Steering
Unplug your internet router for 30 seconds. If your router combines 2.4GHz and 5GHz under one network name (SSID), try separating them in your router settings and connect the Sony TV specifically to the 2.4GHz band for better wall penetration.
Likely causes
- Sony Android TV / Google TV network background service crash
- Out-of-sync System Date & Time blocking secure network handshakes
- Stale DHCP lease or IP address conflict with your router
- Fast Startup / Standby mode preserving corrupted Wi-Fi cache
- Dual-band router steering causing drops between 2.4GHz and 5GHz
- Failing internal Wi-Fi / Bluetooth combo module or loose internal ribbon cable
What's going on
When a Sony TV refuses to connect to Wi-Fi, the underlying culprit is usually software-based rather than an immediate hardware failure. Sony BRAVIA smart TVs run on custom implementations of Android TV or Google TV. While feature-packed, these operating systems rely heavily on background network services that can crash, hang during standby transitions, or lose secure token sync when the system clock drifts.
Before assuming your TV needs a physical repair, walking through structured software resets almost always restores stable wireless connectivity.
Symptoms people notice
- The Wi-Fi switch in the settings menu is greyed out or turns off automatically.
- The TV states it is connected to your router, but apps report "No Internet Connection."
- The network scanning screen spins indefinitely without displaying local Wi-Fi SSIDs.
- The connection drops every single time the TV wakes up from standby mode.
- Network password prompts loop infinitely despite typing the correct credentials.
Likely causes
- Network Stack Glitch: Android OS network services frozen in the background.
- Date/Time Discrepancy: The system clock reverted to a factory default date, failing SSL handshake certificates.
- Standby Cache Corruptions: Sony's "Quick Start" mode saving corrupted Wi-Fi state data.
- Router DHCP Conflicts: The router failing to assign a valid local IP address to the TV.
- Wi-Fi Hardware Failure: A faulty internal USB-attached Wi-Fi/Bluetooth board or loose internal harness.

Quick checks first
Start with the simplest non-invasive fixes before altering system settings:
- Hard Restart: Press and hold the power button on the Sony remote until "Restarting" appears on screen. If your screen is unresponsive, unplug the main AC power cord for at least one minute.
- Verify external devices: Check if smartphones or laptops work on the exact same Wi-Fi connection. If they don't, restart your modem and router first.
- Check USB Port Interference: Unplug any unshielded USB 3.0 hard drives or flash drives plugged into the back of the TV. Strong USB 3.0 radiation is known to interfere with 2.4GHz Wi-Fi antennas located near the board ports.
When it's a real hardware fault
If the Wi-Fi toggle switch repeatedly flips itself to "OFF" instantly, or if the Wi-Fi MAC address listed under Settings > About shows up as 00:00:00:00:00:00 or Unavailable, the TV's internal network module is likely dead or disconnected.
On modern Sony BRAVIA sets, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth share a small secondary daughterboard plugged into the main system board via a thin ribbon cable. When this module fails, Bluetooth remotes may also lose functionality or lag heavily.
Soft resets vs board/panel work
- Soft Resets & OS Tweaks: Completely safe to do yourself. Resetting network settings, clearing system cache, or updating firmware via a USB flash drive solves over 80% of Sony Wi-Fi bugs.
- Hardware/Board Replacement: Replacing the Wi-Fi/Bluetooth board requires removing the back plastic panel of the TV. While cheaper and far less risky than replacing a mainboard or delicate glass display panel, it still requires basic ESD precautions and proper connector handling. If you aren't comfortable opening a TV shell, rely on an external streaming stick (Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV) via HDMI as a reliable workaround.

Next steps
- Run through the full power drain and system clock checks listed above.
- If software fixes fail, test connecting your Sony TV to a mobile phone hotspot. If it connects to the hotspot, your home router settings or band steering are the issue.
- If the Wi-Fi toggle remains completely greyed out or frozen across factory resets, use an Ethernet cable or an external HDMI streaming device to restore smart functionality immediately without disassembling your television.
