Router VPN / Port Forwarding Broken

When port forwarding or built-in VPN tunnels suddenly stop routing traffic, your network breaks. Learn how to troubleshoot Double NAT, firmware firewall glitches, and hardware instability.

What's going on

Port forwarding and Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) rely on your router correctly translating public internet requests to specific internal devices using Network Address Translation (NAT) and stateful packet firewalls. When these services fail, external connections get rejected at the WAN interface, or encrypted tunnels collapse right after handshake initialization.

While software misconfigurations are common, persistent port and VPN failure can also be a hardware symptom. High-throughput VPN encryption places immense strain on small consumer router SoCs. If the router's internal components or external power adapter have degraded, processing heavy packet inspection and encryption can cause memory corruption, kernel panics, or thermal protection trips.

  3. Conflicting Dynamic Rules: UPnP or automatic game-console routing rules can silently hijack local ports specified in your manual forward list.
  4. Incompatible VPN Passthrough: Router firewalls blocking ESP (Encapsulating Security Payload) packets or failing to maintain GRE tunnels.
  5. Power Supply Voltage Sag: A failing power adapter fails to deliver steady current under heavy processing load, forcing CPU brownouts or board protection trips during active VPN tunneling.

Quick checks first

Start by checking your true WAN IP. Log into your router's status page and look at the Internet/WAN IP address field. If it doesn't match the IP returned by searching "what is my IP" online, your ISP has placed you behind Carrier-Grade NAT (CGNAT) or a secondary modem router. You must set your ISP modem into true "Bridge Mode" or contact your provider for a static public IP address.

Next, ensure your target local server has a reserved DHCP IP. If your destination computer's IP changes from 192.168.1.50 to 192.168.1.55 overnight, your old port forwarding rules will direct incoming packets into a void.

When it's a real hardware fault

If rules disappear randomly after cold reboots, or if enabling a WireGuard/OpenVPN tunnel causes the router's status lights to drop into a standby blink pattern, you are likely dealing with hardware degradation:

Soft resets vs board/panel work

Software fixes (firmware updates, factory resets, port re-mappings) resolve over 80% of port forwarding and VPN issues. Always test a clean factory reset before assuming hardware failure.

However, if the failure is linked to power supply brownouts or failing board capacitors, software tweaks will not help.
