Router Ethernet Port Not Working

When your router's Ethernet port stops working, the fix usually comes down to resolving a bad cable connection, a damaged RJ45 pin, or an auto-negotiation failure. Here is how to isolate whether it is a quick setting tweak or a hardware failure.

  • No LED link activity light on the Ethernet port when connected
  • Connected PC or console reports Network Cable Unplugged
  • Wi-Fi works normally but all wired LAN ports fail to grant internet access

Physical issues cause most wired connection drops. A bent pin inside the RJ45 jack prevents the cable from making contact on all eight conductors. High-speed Gigabit communication requires all four wire pairs; if even one wire loses connection, the link will drop to 100 Mbps or fail entirely.

Another common cause is power surge damage. Ethernet ports act as antennas during lightning storms or electrical surges, occasionally frying the PHY controller on the router's mainboard. Quick checks first

  2. Try a different port: Move the cable to another available LAN port on your router. If the second port works immediately, the issue is restricted to the physical port hardware or specific port settings.
  3. Bypass wall jacks: If you are running Ethernet through in-wall keystones or patch panels, bypass them using a direct cable to rule out secondary wiring failures.

When it's a real hardware fault

If single-port hardware damage occurs, it is far safer and cheaper to expand working ports using an inexpensive external unmanaged Gigabit switch.
