Nothing Earbuds Only One Bud Charges in Case

If only one of your Nothing Earbuds is charging in the case, dirty contact pins or a stalled charging handshake are usually to blame. Follow this guide to triage single-bud power failures quickly.

Symptoms

  • Left or right Nothing Earbud remains completely dead while the other reaches 100%
  • The Nothing X app shows a missing icon or 0% battery status for one earbud
  • The case status LED does not flash or pulse when seating the dead earbud
  • The earbud only shows signs of life when pressed down firmly into the case cradle
  • The charging case drains rapidly overnight trying to charge the unresponsive bud
  • Audio plays from only one side after removing both earbuds from a fully charged case

Quick troubleshooting

  1. Step 1

Clean the stem contacts and case pogo pins

Dip a cotton swab in 90%+ isopropyl alcohol and gently scrub the silver metallic pads on the earbud stem. Look inside the transparent Nothing case slot using a flashlight and lightly clean the gold spring pins. Allow everything to air dry for two minutes before reseating.

  2. Step 2

Verify ear tip clearance and magnetic seating

If you are using aftermarket silicone or memory foam tips, temporarily remove them. Place the bare earbud into the charging cradle and ensure you feel a distinct magnetic pull snapping it into place.

  3. Step 3

Top off the case with a direct USB-C cable

Plug the Nothing charging case into a wall adapter using a reliable USB-C cable. Leave both earbuds inside for at least 30 minutes without opening the lid to force a baseline charge into a deep-discharged bud.

  4. Step 4

Execute a full case soft reset

Place both earbuds in the case and keep the lid open. Press and hold the physical pair/reset button on the case for 10 seconds until the LED flashes red three times, then release and attempt re-pairing.

Likely causes

  • Accumulated wax, dust, or skin oil on the stem contact pads or case pogo pins
  • A recessed or damaged spring-loaded pogo pin inside the Nothing case charging slot
  • Third-party ear tips preventing the earbud stem from sitting flush against the contacts
  • Low total case battery preventing proper power distribution to both buds
  • Stuck charging state or micro-controller crash in the earbud firmware
  • Deep-discharged or degraded internal button cell battery inside the dead earbud

What's going on

When only one Nothing Earbud (such as the Ear (1), Ear (2), or Ear (a)) charges inside the transparent case, the problem usually comes down to physical power transfer or charging logic negotiation. Earbuds rely on precision spring-loaded pogo pins to deliver power from the case battery to the tiny lithium cells in each stem.

Because Nothing cases utilize clear enclosures, you can often visually inspect the internal hardware. If micro-debris blocks the contacts or a software bug hangs the charging controller, one stem gets left in the cold while the other powers up normally. Check our broader earbud problem guides for general concepts, or inspect Nothing device reviews to compare build characteristics across generations.

Symptoms people notice

  • Single-side audio: Taking both buds out results in sound from only one side.
  • Asymmetrical app status: The Nothing X app displays 100% for one side and either a greyed-out icon or 0% for the other.
  • No LED reaction: Dropping the working bud into the case triggers a status blink, but dropping the faulty bud produces no light at all.
  • Temporary power on pressure: The uncharged earbud only lights up or charges when manually pushed into the cradle with your finger.
  • Excessive case drain: The charging case loses battery rapidly while attempting to establish a charge loop with the dead earbud.

Likely causes

  1. Dirty charging pads: Skin oils, earwax, and pocket lint form an insulating barrier over the stem contact points.
  2. Stuck or bent pogo pin: One of the spring-loaded pins inside the case pin housing failed to pop back up.
  3. Mismatched ear tips: Oversized third-party silicone tips hold the stem a millimeter too far from the internal magnets.
  4. Depleted case main cell: The case lacks sufficient total voltage to initiate a dual-channel charge cycle.
  5. Firmware state crash: The power management IC inside the earbud froze during its last shutdown sequence.

Quick checks first

Before assuming a dead battery, execute these fast physical triage steps:

  • Visually inspect the pins: Look through the clear plastic of your Nothing case. Ensure both gold pogo pins on the affected side sit at the exact same height as the working side.
  • Strip down accessories: Remove any custom ear tips or neck straps that might alter the balance inside the shell.
  • Isolate power: Plug the case directly into a wired USB-C charger. Avoid wireless charging pads while troubleshooting single-bud charging errors, as wireless induction can add thermal throttling into the mix.

When it's a real hardware fault

If you have thoroughly cleaned the contacts and the earbud still fails to show a charge LED after 30 minutes on a wired cable, you may be dealing with a hardware-level component failure:

  • Collapsed Pogo Pin: If a pin inside the case is permanently bent flat or stuck down into its housing, power cannot complete the circuit.
  • Dead Earbud Cell: Small lithium-ion batteries can permanently lock up if left fully discharged for extended periods.
  • Corroded Contact Board: Liquid ingress inside the stem can short the tiny charging controller board.

Unlike traditional electronics, tiny true-wireless earbuds are tightly sealed with adhesive. Board-level work or replacing individual micro-cells is generally not practical or safe as a DIY project.

Soft resets vs board/panel work

Always attempt software recovery before giving up on a non-charging earbud:

  • Soft Reset / Reset Button: Holding the case function button while connected to power forces the internal microcontroller to reboot its power distribution states. This resolves 80% of software-based charge refusal bugs.
  • Physical Hardware Interventions: Attempting to bend micro-pins with metal tools or prying open the transparent Nothing stem housing almost always leads to permanent cosmetic and structural damage. If soft resets and alcohol cleaning do not work, avoid aggressive physical tearing.

Next steps

  1. Clean all contact surfaces thoroughly using 90%+ isopropyl alcohol and a clean swab.
  2. Leave the case open, drop both buds in, and perform a 10-second factory reset using the side button.
  3. Keep the case plugged into a verified wired USB-C wall charger for one hour.
  4. Check the Nothing X app to see if battery telemetry returns for both sides.
  5. If the bud remains dead, compare failure symptoms across our earbud troubleshooting catalog or look into unit replacement options.
