Monitor No Signal HDMI

An HDMI 'No Signal' error usually points to a failed EDID handshake, a corrupted video driver, or a bad cable rather than a dead monitor panel. Follow this triage guide to restore your display.

Symptoms

  • Monitor displays 'HDMI - No Signal' message and enters standby mode
  • Screen flashes the desktop for a second, then cuts to a black screen
  • Backlight turns on, but no visual output or audio passes through HDMI
  • Monitor works on DisplayPort or VGA, but fails specifically over HDMI
  • On-screen display shows 'Cable Not Connected' even when plugged in
  • Display drops signal intermittently when touching or adjusting the HDMI cable

Quick troubleshooting

  1. Step 1

    Perform an AC power drain and handshake reset

    Unplug the power cables for both your monitor and PC from the wall outlet. Disconnect the HDMI cable from both devices and wait full two minutes. Reconnect the HDMI cable firmly first, then plug in power and turn the devices back on. This forces the display scaler and graphics card to renegotiate the EDID handshake from scratch.

    Manually lock the monitor's OSD input source

    Do not rely on your monitor's auto-source detection, as auto-switching often skips active ports. Use the physical buttons or joystick on the back or bottom of the monitor to open the On-Screen Display (OSD). Navigate to the Input or Source menu and manually lock it to 'HDMI 1' or 'HDMI 2' depending on where your cable is connected.

    Isolate the cable and direct port connections

    Bypass all HDMI switches, splitters, AV receivers, or USB-C dongles by running a single, known-working HDMI cable directly from the GPU to the monitor. If you are on a desktop PC, ensure the cable is plugged into the dedicated graphics card port near the bottom, not the motherboard's integrated video output near the top ports.

    Reset display drivers and boot into Safe Mode

    If the monitor drops signal right as Windows loads, your PC is likely outputting an unsupported resolution or refresh rate. Use the shortcut Win + Ctrl + Shift + B to restart the graphics driver. If that fails, connect a secondary display or boot Windows into Safe Mode to reset your display settings to native 1080p at 60Hz.

    Shine a light into the HDMI ports on both the monitor and graphics card to check for bent pins, debris, or a loose center tongue.   • PC output set to an unsupported resolution or refresh rate
  • Outdated, corrupt, or crashed graphics card drivers
  • Physical pin damage or ESD burn on the monitor or GPU HDMI port
  • Failed HDMI receiver chip or logic board component on the monitor

What's going on

When a monitor displays an "HDMI No Signal" prompt, it means the display panel itself is getting power, but its internal scaler board is not receiving a readable video feed. HDMI is not just a passive wire—it relies on active, two-way communication called Display Data Channel (DDC) and Extended Display Identification Data (EDID).

If the graphics card (source) and the monitor (sink) fail to agree on timing, resolution, or HDCP copyright protection, the monitor rejects the signal and goes into power-saving mode.   • The monitor turns on, shows the manufacturer logo, then immediately states "No Signal" and sleeps.

Likely causes

  1. Corrupted HDMI Handshake: The monitor's microprocessor and the GPU's display engine got stuck in an invalid handshaking loop.
  2. Cable Bandwidth Mismatch: Using an outdated High Speed (HDMI 1.4) cable for bandwidth-heavy demands like 4K, HDR, or high refresh rates (HDMI 2.0/2.1).
  3. Incorrect Display Adapter / Port: Plugging the HDMI cable into an inactive motherboard video port when a dedicated graphics card is installed.
  4. Unmatched Output Settings: Sending a custom resolution or refresh rate that the monitor scaler cannot process.
  5. Driver Crash: The GPU display driver suspended or crashed during a Windows update or system sleep state.
  6. Hardware Fault: Damaged HDMI connector pins, broken solder joints, or a fried HDMI controller chip on the monitor's mainboard.

Quick checks first

Start with the simplest physical points of failure:

  • Check the GPU slot: On desktop PCs, ensure the HDMI cable connects to the horizontal ports on the dedicated GPU (NVIDIA/AMD), not the vertical ports on the motherboard IO shield.
  • Test physical cable seating: HDMI connectors lack locking latches. A saggy GPU or tight cable angle can pull the plug out by a fraction of a millimeter, breaking communication.
  • Try a secondary cable: Swap out cheap thin cables for a certified Premium High Speed (18Gbps) or Ultra High Speed (48Gbps) HDMI cable.
  • Toggle input manually: Access the monitor's physical button menu to explicitly choose the exact HDMI port you are plugged into.

When it's a real hardware fault

If you have swapped cables, tested multiple computers, and still see "No Signal" across every input, the issue is likely inside the monitor housing. Common hardware failures include:

  • Physical Port Breakage: Internal solder joints on the HDMI jack can snap off the printed circuit board (PCB) from repeated strain or plugging cables in at an angle.
  • ESD Burnout: HDMI ports transfer live 5V power. Hot-swapping cables can generate static discharge that kills the ESD protection diodes or the main scaler IC.
  • Blown Board Capacitors: Aging power supply or logic board capacitors can cause voltage drops that prevent the HDMI receiver module from turning on, even if the backlight still lights up.

Soft resets vs board/panel work

Performing cable swaps, OSD resets, and driver reinstalls are easy soft resets every user should attempt. However, replacing broken HDMI ports, micro-soldering burned transceiver chips, or repairing logic boards requires specialized surface-mount tools and high-voltage safety precautions.

Because standalone monitor logic boards are rarely sold as individual consumer spare parts, physical internal repairs are usually not cost-effective or safe for a DIY project.
