Monitor Has Power But No Image

When your monitor's power light turns on but the screen remains completely dark, the issue ranges from simple input signal failures to dead backlight arrays or bad T-con boards.

  • Power LED lights up solid (blue or white), but the screen shows no graphics or OSD menu.
  • Screen flashes a logo briefly on power-up, then immediately cuts to total darkness.

  1. Step 1

    Perform the Flashlight Test

    Shine a bright light (like a smartphone flashlight) directly at an angle against the monitor screen while your PC is on. If you can faintly see your desktop icons, windows, or text, your monitor's mainboard is working, but its backlight LEDs or LED driver circuit have failed.

    Hard Power Reset

    Unplug the monitor's power cable from the wall outlet and the back of the monitor. Press and hold the physical power button on the monitor for 30 seconds to drain remaining power from the capacitors. Reconnect the cable directly to a wall outlet and turn it back on.

    Verify Cable Handshake and Input Selection

    Unplug and firmly re-seat both ends of your HDMI or DisplayPort cable, or swap to a tested secondary cable. Use the physical toggle buttons on the monitor to manually cycle through input channels (HDMI 1, HDMI 2, DP) rather than relying on auto-detection.

    Isolate the Signal Source

    Plug the monitor into a secondary display source, such as a laptop, game console, or streaming stick. If the screen displays an image with another device, your original PC's graphics card or display driver settings are causing the blackout.

When a monitor displays a active power LED but no picture, the device is receiving electricity, but the signal pipeline is breaking somewhere between the power supply, the main processing logic, the T-con board, and the LCD/OLED panel itself.

Diagnosing this issue comes down to isolating whether the problem is a signal handshake failure (PC isn't sending a image the monitor accepts), a backlight failure (the image is generated, but not illuminated), or a logic board failure (the monitor panel receives power, but cannot process image pixels).

  2. Backlight Driver / LED Failure: The backlight strips burned out or the driver circuit on the power board cut power to protect the panel.
  3. T-Con Board Failure: The Timing Controller board responsible for driving pixel columns and rows stopped rendering the image signal.
  4. Blown Mainboard Capacitors: Power delivery to the display logic failed, keeping the light-emitting diode active while killing the processor.

  • Test the OSD (On-Screen Display): Press the Menu button on the monitor. If the monitor's settings menu pops up, your panel and backlight are healthy, and the problem is strictly your PC signal, cable, or GPU driver.
  • Force a GPU Driver Reset: On Windows, press Win + Ctrl + Shift + B to restart the graphics driver.

  • Dead T-Con Board: If the screen illuminates with a uniform dark-gray glow but no image or OSD ever appears, the T-con board or mainboard logic isn't sending pixel instructions to the panel ribbon cables.

Soft resets vs board/panel work

Soft resets (power cycling, cable swaps, driver resets) should always be attempted first. However, if troubleshooting points to an internal board failure, repair viability changes:

  • Capacitor / Board Swaps: Replacing internal power boards or T-con boards requires opening the monitor chassis, which often involves prying fragile plastic clips and working near high-voltage capacitors.
