Linksys Router Can't Connect New Devices

When existing phones stay online but your Linksys router rejects every new laptop, tablet, or smart home plug, the fix usually lies in DHCP pool limits or security mode mismatches. Here is how to troubleshoot and reconnect.

  • Existing devices remain connected to Wi-Fi, but new devices get stuck on 'Obtaining IP address'.

What's going on

Few things are more frustrating than unboxing a new phone, laptop, or smart TV, only for your Linksys router to shut the door on it while every existing device in the house streams seamlessly.

When a router selectively blocks new devices, the issue is rarely a total Wi-Fi breakdown. Instead, it points to localized network management bottlenecks: the router's local IP distribution system (DHCP) has run out of addresses, the security handshake protocol is too modern for the incoming device, or local access control rules are blocking unrecognized network cards.

  • The 'Obtaining IP...' Loop: The new device sees the Wi-Fi signal, attempts to connect, but hangs indefinitely on IP address assignment.
  • False Password Errors: The device insists the Wi-Fi password is wrong, even after double-checking every character.

  • Guest Network Works, Main Network Fails: The new device joins the Linksys Guest Wi-Fi instantly, but is rejected by the main SSID.

  3. Band Steering / Seamless Roaming Glitches: Linksys Velop mesh and dual-band routers try to force devices onto 5 GHz or 6 GHz. Legacy 2.4 GHz devices drop connection during this handshake.
  4. Stale Lease Tables: A firmware bug cause the router to hold dead IP allocations for devices that left the network days ago.

  • Test a Static IP: On the new device, manually assign a free IP address (e.g., 192.168.1.222), subnet mask 255.255.255.0, and gateway 192.168.1.1. If it connects, your DHCP server is definitely the bottleneck.
  • Check Private Wi-Fi Address Settings: Modern iPhones and Androids use randomized 'Private MAC Addresses'. If your Linksys router has MAC filtering enabled, toggling this setting on or off on your phone can trigger immediate blockades.

When it's a real hardware fault

Soft resets vs board/panel work

  • Soft Resets & Firmware Reloads: Clearing NVRAM via a 10-second reset button hold or re-flashing the official Linksys firmware resolves 99% of DHCP pool and authentication bugs.
