LG UltraWide Uneven Backlight / Vignette
Dark edges, shadow bands, and dim corners on an LG UltraWide display can stem from software power-saving features, normal IPS viewing angles, or failing LED backlight strips.
Symptoms

- Vertical shadow bands or dim columns across the screen
- One half of the display noticeably dimmer than the other
- Backlight flickering in isolated zones during bright scenes

Step 1
Disable Smart Energy Saving and Local Dimming
Use the directional joystick beneath the center bezel to open the OSD menu. Navigate to Settings > General > Smart Energy Saving and turn it Off. Next, check Picture Adjust > Local Dimming and set it to Low or Off to see if the vignette or dim zones disappear.
Step 2
Perform a power discharge soft reset
Unplug the power adapter from the back of the monitor and disconnect all display cables. Press and hold the OSD power joystick for 15 seconds to drain residual electricity from the internal capacitors. Reconnect power directly to a wall outlet without dock or hub passthroughs.
Step 3
Evaluate viewing distance and IPS glow
Ultrawide monitors—especially 34-inch and 38-inch flat or mildly curved models—suffer from off-axis illumination drop-off. Move back 3 to 4 feet and align your eyes with the center of the panel. If the dim edges shift or disappear as your head moves, the effect is normal IPS glow rather than an LED failure.

Test full-screen solid color test patterns
Load full-screen solid white, 50% gray, and pure black test images. Dark columns or hard static shadows on gray and white patterns point toward dead LED sectors or degraded diffuser sheets, whereas dark room light leakage on black patterns indicates bezel pressure or backlight bleed.
Step 5
Check VESA mount frame tension
Excessive torque on VESA mounting screws or tight desk arm clamps can flex the monitor casing, pinching internal diffuser layers. Temporarily remove the monitor from its arm and place it on its factory stand to determine if frame pressure is causing the shading.

Because these displays stretch horizontally, maintaining uniform light distribution requires precise LED placement and optical diffusion sheets.

Likely causes
Backlight uniformity complaints on LG displays generally fall into three categories: settings, viewing ergonomics, or hardware breakdown. LG's built-in Smart Energy Saving feature dynamically throttles edge lighting, often causing aggressive vignetting on wide screens.
On the hardware side, most UltraWide monitors rely on edge-lit LED strips positioned along the bottom or sides of the frame. Similarly, if half of the panel remains perpetually dim regardless of brightness settings, the power board's LED backlight driver section is likely failing.
Physical bezel damage or frame bending from tight monitor arm brackets can also permanently crease the internal optical sheets, producing permanent dark spots.
Soft resets vs board/panel work
Soft resets, OSD tweaks, and power cycling are safe, zero-risk steps every user should attempt. However, repairing the internal hardware of an ultrawide monitor is a different story.
Disassembling a curved or large-format ultrawide panel to access the LED backlight strips requires removing the fragile glass substrate. The risk of cracking the liquid crystal display during teardown is extremely high. Furthermore, replacement edge-lit LED strips and matching optical sheets are rarely sold as standalone consumer parts. If simple resets do not resolve the vignette, hardware repairs generally require full panel module replacement.
