Hisense Projector No Picture But Has Sound

When your Hisense projector or Laser TV plays sound but projects no light, the culprit is usually an HDMI handshake freeze, a tripped eye-safety sensor, or a failed laser power rail.

Symptoms

  • Audio plays clearly through internal speakers or eARC soundbar, but the projection lens output is pitch black.
  • The status indicator light turns on normally without showing an error code or blinking light sequence.
  • Brief flash of the Hisense or VIDAA/Google TV startup logo before the image completely vanishes.
  • Remote control button presses produce audible click sounds, but no menu or settings UI appears on screen.
  • Faint optical glow is visible inside the lens channel, but no focused image or light hits the wall.
  • The screen goes black intermittently when switching resolutions, frame rates, or HDR formats.

Quick troubleshooting

  1. Step 1

    Perform a deep hardware power reset

    Disconnect the main power cord from the wall outlet and wait a full five minutes. While unplugged, hold down the physical power button on the projector chassis for 15 seconds to drain residual energy from the capacitors. Plug the power cable directly into a wall outlet, bypassing surge protectors, and power the unit back on.

  2. Step 2

    Inspect and clean the Eye Safety Sensors

    Hisense Laser TVs and ultra-short-throw models feature proximity sensors near the lens aperture designed to dim or shut off the laser if someone looks into it. Inspect the top glass surrounding the lens and gently wipe away dust or smudges with a microfiber cloth. Ensure no objects, shelves, or wall-mount lips are hovering near the sensor field.

  3. Step 3

    Isolate the input source and force an OSD call

    Unplug all HDMI inputs from the projector. Press the Home or Settings button on the Hisense remote to see if the internal menu overlay appears on screen. If the menu works, the issue is an HDCP video handshake failure on your connected streaming device, console, or cable.

    Swap HDMI ports and adjust signal format settings

    Reconnect your source into a non-eARC HDMI port using an Ultra High Speed 48Gbps HDMI cable. If you can access settings via the mobile remote app, navigate to Picture/Inputs and change the HDMI Format from Enhanced/Auto to Standard to resolve signal decoding conflicts.

  • Faulty secondary power supply rail that cuts high-voltage power to the laser driver while leaving low-voltage audio active.
  • Blown laser diode bank or defective laser driver board inside the Trichroma or single-laser engine.
  • Loose internal LVDS ribbon cable connecting the mainboard to the DMD chip formatter board.

What's going on

When a Hisense projector or Laser TV powers on, plays crisp audio, and responds to remote commands, but projects zero light onto your wall, the display processing system has desynchronized from the audio engine. On modern ultra-short-throw (UST) units like the Hisense PX1-Pro, L5, or L9 series, the power board supplies distinct voltage rails for low-power microcontrollers and audio amplifiers versus the high-voltage demands of the laser diode driver.

In many cases, the core motherboard is alive and processing audio signals normally, but the system has cut power to the laser light engine or lost signal communication with the Digital Micromirror Device (DMD) board.

Symptoms people notice

  • Full audio playback from connected streaming apps, built-in TV tuners, or external HDMI sources, but the projected screen remains totally dark.
  • System status LEDs turn solid white or blue, indicating normal operational mode rather than a thermal error or light failure state.
  • The display occasionally flashes a brief Hisense boot logo before dropping into complete darkness.
  • Pressing volume up/down on the remote produces audible system feedback chimes, but pressing the Settings key yields no visible menu.
  • Internal cooling fans spin up quietly as expected, but the room remains dark.

Likely causes

Understanding why the image failed while audio survived helps narrow down software glitches versus hardware hardware failures:

  1. HDMI HDCP Handshake Failure: Content protection protocols between modern streaming boxes and the projector can crash the video pipeline while allowing unencrypted PCM or bitstream audio to play through.
  2. Tripped Proximity Safety Sensor: Built-in eye protection sensors kill the laser instantly if dust, pets, or improper placement block the sensor windows.
  3. OS Surface Compositor Crash: The underlying operating system (VIDAA or Google TV) can experience a display server crash where video rendering stops, but back-end audio services continue running.
  4. Laser Driver Board Failure: The internal power supply or dedicated laser driver board suffers a component failure, cutting current to the laser diodes.
  5. DMD Formatter Disconnect: The flexible ribbon cable bridging the mainboard to the Texas Instruments DLP projection engine has loosened or degraded.

Quick checks first

Before assuming your optical engine has burned out, rule out external communication conflicts by checking other projector troubleshooting guides and performing these steps:

  • Hard Cold Boot: Unplug the power cord from the wall. Wait 5 minutes to clear volatile memory onboard the Hisense system board before plugging it back in.
  • Disconnect All Inputs: Remove every HDMI cable, USB drive, and audio output cable. Power on the unit with only the power cable attached to see if the native setup screen returns.
  • Clean the Sensor Lens: Clean the IR proximity sensors sitting alongside the primary optical glass with an optics-safe microfiber cloth.

When it's a real hardware fault

If performing a cold restart without any HDMI devices attached still yields a pitch-black screen, you are likely dealing with an internal hardware failure:

  • Blown Laser Power Board: Hisense Laser TVs rely on dedicated high-current driver boards to feed the laser array. If the power MOSFETs or capacitors on this board fail, the laser engine stays completely off while the rest of the projector operates normally.
  • Optical Engine Laser Diode Degradation: In multi-color laser systems (Trichroma), an failure in the primary blue or red laser bank forces the engine controller into a protective shutdown state.
  • DMD Controller Failure: If the laser turns on (visible as a faint internal glow) but no picture or grid appears, the DMD controller chip or main system processing board is no longer outputting pixel data.

Soft resets vs board/panel work

Fixing software glitches, HDMI HDCP lockups, and dirty proximity sensors can easily be done at home without opening the chassis. Power cycling resets the handshake keys between devices and clears temporary OS freezes.

However, opening a ultra-short-throw laser projector to replace internal circuit boards involves handling high-voltage power supplies and highly sensitive optical assemblies. Misaligning the optical engine or exposing the interior to dust can permanently ruin image focus and color uniformity. Board-level diagnostics and laser module replacements require specialized testing equipment and are not suitable DIY projects.
