Google Router No Picture But Has Sound
If your Google router or screen-equipped smart mesh point plays audio and broadcasts Wi-Fi but displays a totally dark screen, the main logic board is running while the display panel or backlight driver has failed.
Symptoms
- Device broadcasts Wi-Fi and responds to voice commands, but the screen stays pitch black
- Startup chimes and network status alerts play clearly without any display output
- Faint outline of the setup screen is visible when shining a flashlight directly onto the glass

Step 1
Perform a complete hard power discharge
Unplug the power cable from the back of your Google device and the wall outlet. Wait at least two full minutes to allow all onboard capacitors to drain fully. Plug the power adapter directly into a dedicated wall socket rather than a crowded power strip to rule out voltage drop.

Perform the flashlight backlight test
Darken the room and shine a bright flashlight or phone light at a sharp angle against the screen while the device is powered on. What's going on
When a Google mesh router point or screen-enabled smart display hub produces sound, answers voice prompts, and routes internet traffic but shows no picture, the core system-on-chip (SoC) is functioning normally. The problem is isolated specifically to the display subsystem—either the LED backlight array, the display ribbon connection, the power supply rail dedicated to panel drive, or the display panel itself.
Because network routing and audio rendering require very little power compared to driving a backlit panel, a degrading power adapter or damaged power management IC (PMIC) will often keep Wi-Fi and sound alive while shutting down the display to protect the board.

- Audio without video: Startup chimes, network status alerts, and Assistant replies play normally through the speaker.
- App status is green: The Google Home hub reports the router point as healthy and connected to the mesh network.

- Intermittent flicker: The screen flashes white or displays a brief logo during boot, then instantly fades to black.
Likely causes
- Failed LED Backlight Driver: The high-voltage circuit powering the screen backlight LEDs has burned out or tripped a protection diode.
- Faulty Power Supply: The external power brick has lost voltage stability, collapsing under the load required to light the panel.
- Loose Display Ribbon: Internal drop impact or thermal expansion loosened the internal display cable from the mainboard.
- Display Firmware Freeze: Software state corruptions caused the display driver process to crash while the underlying OS continues running.
- Panel Matrix Failure: Internal glass micro-fractures or shorted display drivers permanently disabling image output.
Quick checks first
Before assuming hardware failure, address simple power and environment issues:
- Check the power supply: Plug the adapter directly into a wall outlet, removing extension cords or surge protectors that might limit current.
- Run the flashlight test: Hold a light against the glass in a dim room. If you see image outlines, your issue is strictly a backlight failure rather than a total graphics subsystem crash.
- Check environment temperature: If the router is sitting near a window, heater, or trapped inside an unventilated cabinet, thermal throttling may switch off screen power while keeping basic networking active. Let the unit cool down completely.

Soft resets vs board/panel work
Performing a hard power cycle or hardware factory reset is safe and should always be done first. A soft reset reloads display drivers and clears corrupted framebuffers without physical risk.
However, microscopic solder work, display panel replacement, or reflowing backlight controller ICs requires specialized hot-air reworking equipment and micro-soldering experience. If basic resets and OEM power supply replacements fail to bring back picture output, replacing the unit or sourcing a replacement point is usually more practical than attempting manual panel repair.
