GL.iNet Router No WAN / Internet Light

When your GL.iNet router fails to light up its WAN or Internet LED, the issue usually stems from an ISP MAC handshake mismatch, port role misconfiguration, or a cable negotiation fault.

  1. Step 1

    Perform a synchronized power cycle

    Unplug the power cables from both your upstream modem/ONT and your GL.iNet router. Wait two full minutes to clear the ISP lease and MAC table. Plug the modem back in first, wait until its online lights stabilize, and then plug in your GL.iNet router.

What's going on

When the WAN or Internet LED on your GL.iNet router stays dark, the hardware is telling you that it cannot establish a physical link or logical connection with your upstream modem or optical network terminal (ONT). GL.iNet devices run customized OpenWrt software, which provides immense flexibility but can occasionally trigger handshaking quirks, port reassignments, or MAC binding friction with traditional service providers.

Quick checks first

First, check the physical connection. Unplug the cable connecting the modem and the GL.iNet WAN port, inspect the RJ45 head for missing latches or dirt, and firmly re-seat it.
