Epson Projector No Picture But Has Sound

When your Epson projector outputs normal audio but leaves you with a completely dark screen, the issue usually points to a blown lamp, ballast failure, HDMI handshake failure, or AV mute trigger.

  • Status LED shows solid blue power, but the projected screen remains completely pitch black.

  1. Step 1

    Check the A/V Mute and Lens Shutter settings

    Epson remotes include an 'A/V Mute' button that cuts optical output and mutes projection while leaving internal routing active. Press 'A/V Mute' on your remote or open the physical lens shutter fully to ensure the light path isn't manually blocked.

  2. Step 2

    Cycle HDMI inputs and test direct resolution settings

    Disconnect the HDMI cable from your source device and reconnect it while both devices are on. If your source is set to an unsupported refresh rate or 4K resolution on an older 1080p Epson model, the projector may process audio while dropping video.

What's going on

When an Epson projector produces crisp audio but leaves your screen completely dark, it proves that the system's power supply and main logic board are partially operational. Audio signals entering via HDMI or auxiliary ports pass through the mainboard's audio processing chip and internal amplifier independently of the video projection assembly.

Because the display path requires a separate high-voltage lamp ballast, an intense light source, an optical engine with 3LCD panels, and dedicated video processing ICs, a hardware failure along the display chain will kill the image while leaving the sound intact.

  • Audio from a connected streaming device or game console continues playing through internal speakers or audio-out ports.
  • The projector lens remains totally dark with no light beam casting onto the wall or screen.

  2. Ballast Board Failure: The ballast board provides the necessary high-voltage arc to strike and maintain the lamp flame. If the ballast fails, the lamp never ignites even if the bulb itself is functional.
  3. A/V Mute Mode Triggered: An accidental press of the 'A/V Mute' button on the remote blanked the display.
  4. HDMI HDCP Handshake Loss: Copy-protection protocols or resolution mismatches can cause video negotiation to fail while multi-channel audio passes through smoothly.
  5. Main Logic Board Video IC Fault: Power surges or thermal wear can damage the specific HDMI receiver chip or video processing bus on the mainboard.

Quick checks first

Before taking hardware apart, rule out quick software or interface glitches:

  • Verify A/V Mute Status: Press the A/V Mute button on your Epson remote control. Ensure any physical slide-shutter covering the lens is fully retracted.
