Eero Router HDMI Not Working

If your HDMI-connected streaming setup, eARC soundbar, or smart TV loses signal or sync over your Eero mesh network, here is how to triage network handshakes, port banking, and band steering.

Symptoms

  • Smart TV or streaming box shows network errors while switching HDMI inputs
  • eARC soundbar audio drops out or desyncs during high-bitrate media playback
  • HDMI-CEC commands (remote control over HDMI) lag or freeze when streaming
  • AirPlay or Chromecast devices connected via HDMI fail to show up in the Eero app
  • Streaming media drops connection when moving between Eero mesh nodes
  • Eero gateway auto-negotiates lower speed on ethernet-connected HDMI streaming bridges

Quick troubleshooting

  1. Step 1

    Perform a Sequenced Power Cycle

Unplug your primary Eero gateway router and all connected HDMI media devices, AV receivers, and TVs. Wait 60 seconds before powering on the Eero gateway first. Once the Eero status light turns solid white, power on your TV, soundbar, and streaming hardware to re-establish clean DHCP leases and HDMI-CEC handshakes.

  2. Step 2

Verify Local Network Access and Disable Guest Mode

Open the Eero mobile app and check if your streaming box or smart TV is assigned to the Guest Network. Guest networks isolate devices from one another, breaking local HDMI-CEC, AirPlay, and eARC discovery protocols. Move all entertainment devices back to the main Wi-Fi network and toggle off 'Client Isolation' if custom profiles are configured.

  3. Step 3

Check Ethernet Port Banking on the Eero Gateway

If you use an HDMI-over-Ethernet switch or wired streaming bridge, swap the port connection on the back of your Eero router. Eero units use auto-sensing auto-MDIX ports, but port banking glitche—where a port gets stuck in 100Mbps mode instead of Gigabit—can starve 4K HDMI streams. Inspect the RJ45 port for bent pins or debris.

  4. Step 4

Disable WPA3 and Eero Labs Experimental Features

Navigate to Settings > Network Settings in the Eero app and temporarily disable WPA3 cross-compatibility and IPv6. Many smart TVs and AV receivers with HDMI smart hubs use older network chipsets that drop packets when handshaking with modern WPA3 or optimized thread protocols.

Likely causes

  • Eero Client Isolation or Guest Network blocking local mDNS handshakes between HDMI devices
  • Band steering forcing 5GHz HDMI streaming receivers onto a congested 2.4GHz band
  • Ethernet port banking auto-negotiation failure on the main Eero gateway unit
  • Eero Labs experimental features (WPA3/IPv6) disrupting legacy smart TV network stacks
  • Poor mesh node placement creating latency spikes for wireless HDMI passthrough setups
  • Corrupted network cache on the gateway Eero node affecting local device discovery

What's going on

Eero routers do not feature physical HDMI video output ports. When users encounter an "Eero HDMI not working" error, the issue stems from how the Eero mesh topology handles network traffic for HDMI-connected ecosystem devices. This includes Fire TV Home Theater setups, eARC audio passthrough over Wi-Fi, HDMI-CEC control protocols, and wireless HDMI streaming transmitters.

When local network protocols like mDNS or SSDP fail across Eero nodes, your TV and soundbar fail to communicate over the HDMI ARC or eARC channel. Resolving this requires network triage rather than replacing physical display cables.

Symptoms people notice

  • Smart TVs reporting offline status despite being plugged into an active HDMI streaming dongle.
  • Soundbars using HDMI eARC dropping audio intermittently during high-bandwidth 4K video playback.
  • Mobile devices failing to cast video to HDMI receivers connected across secondary Eero mesh nodes.
  • The Eero app reporting frequent disconnects for streaming hardware paired with AV receivers.
  • Delayed response times when using universal remotes that rely on Wi-Fi to HDMI-CEC bridging.

Likely causes

Network instability in smart home entertainment setups usually comes down to band steering and node handshakes. If your gateway Eero forces your streaming player onto the 2.4GHz band while your phone or control hub is on 5GHz, local HDMI control protocols can break.

Additionally, port banking issues on the physical Ethernet jacks of the Eero router can throttle streaming bandwidth to attached switches, causing video playback to lock up. For broader hardware issues across other devices, check our /problems/routers resource hub.

Quick checks first

  1. Inspect Physical Connections: Ensure all HDMI cables are HDMI 2.0 or 2.1 rated, especially when routing 4K HDR signals or eARC audio alongside network streams.
  2. Test Band Steering Pause: In the Eero app, go to Settings > Troubleshooting > My device won't connect, and temporarily pause 5GHz to force all devices onto the same frequency.
  3. Review Connected Devices: Confirm in the Eero device list that your smart TV, audio receiver, and streaming player are receiving strong signal strength (-65 dBm or better).

When it's a real hardware fault

If your Eero gateway's Ethernet port fails to deliver gigabit speeds to a wired HDMI matrix or switch despite trying multiple high-cat cables, the physical RJ45 jack on the Eero PCB may have damaged solder joints or blown PHY transformer chips caused by power surges.

Similarly, if an Eero node overheats and consistently drops connection specifically during heavy media streaming, the internal Wi-Fi SoC or thermal pads may be degrading. You can check individual device teardowns and hardware reliability scores in our /reviews section.

Soft resets vs board/panel work

A soft reset via the Eero app or pressing the physical reset button for 7–10 seconds (until the LED flashes yellow) reboots the OS and clears corrupted network tables without losing your SSID and password.

If the issue lies within the TV's HDMI mainboard, the eARC receiver board, or a damaged physical port on the Eero unit itself, software resets will not fix it. Micro-soldering port replacements or TV mainboard swaps are delicate component-level repairs; if a hardware port is physically broken, replacing the gateway router or AV board is typically the safest path.

Next steps

Start by cycling your entire network and media stack in order. If local streaming and HDMI-CEC control remain broken, reconfigure your Eero network settings to disable experimental features and ensure no client isolation is active.
