Earbuds ANC Not Working

When Active Noise Cancellation suddenly fails or introduces harsh crackling, the issue usually stems from dirty feedforward mic grilles, an improper ear tip seal, or software mode glitches.

Symptoms

  • Low-frequency background noise like engine hum or fans passes through unfiltered
  • Wind noise produces a harsh whistling or crackling sound when ANC is turned on
  • ANC mode toggles off automatically or stays greyed out in the companion app
  • One earbud suppresses noise while the other plays ambient sound or static
  • High-pitched feedback or squealing occurs when inserting or adjusting the earbud
  • Noise cancellation feels weak, muffled, or uneven between left and right ears

Quick troubleshooting

  1. Step 1

    Clean external and nozzle microphone vents

    Inspect the microscopic mesh grilles on the outer shell and near the ear tip nozzle. Use a dry, soft-bristle brush or clean microfiber cloth to gently remove earwax, lint, and oils blocking the feedforward sensors.

  2. Step 2

    Re-seat earbuds and adjust ear tip size

    ANC depends on a tight acoustic seal inside your ear canal. Swap to a larger silicone or memory foam tip if the seal feels loose, and ensure both earbuds are seated firmly so proximity sensors register full wear.

  3. Step 3

    Cycle noise control modes in the companion app

    Open your earbud control app and manually toggle between ANC, Off, and Transparency modes. If using adaptive noise control, try setting ANC to a fixed maximum level to override automatic environmental switching.

    Perform a hardware soft reset in the charging case

    Place both earbuds into the charging case, keep the lid open, and hold the system setup button for 10 to 15 seconds until the status LED flashes. This resets internal audio DSP states and clears Bluetooth pairing glitches.

What's going on

Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) relies on a continuous real-time loop. Outward-facing feedforward microphones listen to external environmental noise, while internal feedback microphones monitor the sound reaching your ear canal. The earbud's onboard digital signal processor (DSP) rapidly generates anti-phase sound waves to cancel out low-frequency rumble.

When ANC stops working, the culprit is rarely a completely blown audio driver. More often, dirty microphone ports are starving the system of external ambient data, a poor ear tip seal is letting sound leak straight into your ear, or software mode locks are preventing the DSP from engaging dual-ear cancellation.

Symptoms people notice

  • Engine hums, HVAC fans, and road noise stay completely audible despite ANC being enabled.
  • A sudden high-pitched squeal or chirping sound occurs when pressing the earbud into your ear.
  • ANC works normally in one ear while the other bud remains in ambient passthrough mode.

  • Ambient wind creates a harsh, distorted rushing noise whenever ANC is toggled on.

Likely causes

  1. Dirty mic grilles: Earwax, skin oils, and pocket lint block the tiny mesh openings used by feedforward microphones to sample ambient sound.
  2. Inadequate acoustic seal: Loose or worn ear tips allow ambient pressure waves to bypass the noise-canceling anti-wave entirely.
  3. Single-bud operating mode: Many wireless earbud chipsets automatically disable active cancellation if only one earbud is detected as worn.
  4. Optical sensor miscalibration: Dirty optical proximity sensors may report that an earbud isn't in your ear, preventing ANC from activating.
  5. Stuck firmware state: Multi-point Bluetooth switches or interrupted background app updates can lock the DSP in a bypass state.
  6. Internal mic failure: Sweat or drop impacts can short out tiny internal MEMS microphone elements, causing high-pitched feedback loops.

Quick checks first

Start by taking off the silicone ear tips and inspecting all microphone openings on the earbud body. Clean away any wax buildup using a dry Q-tip or soft toothbrush—never use liquids, alcohol, or sharp metal pins that can puncture internal acoustic mesh filters.

Next, ensure both earbuds are seated properly in your ears. If your companion app features an "Ear Tip Fit Test," run it to verify whether your current tips provide an airtight seal. If you regularly use a single earbud, remember that full ANC typically requires both units to be inserted simultaneously so the DSP can calculate spatial noise profiles.

When it's a real hardware fault

If your earbud emits a continuous, harsh high-pitched squeal as soon as ANC is toggled on, you are hearing an acoustic feedback loop. This happens when an internal microphone or seal fails, causing the anti-phase output from the speaker driver to re-enter the feedforward microphone.

Cracked outer casings, liquid damage from heavy workouts, or severe drops can permanently destroy the delicate MEMS microphones mounted to the internal flex board. When these hardware components fail, the system cannot measure ambient sound accurately, rendering ANC permanently ineffective or distorted.

Soft resets vs board/panel work

A soft reset clears corrupt Bluetooth pairing tables and resets earbud sensor calibration without opening the hardware. To perform a reset, place both buds in their charging case, connect the case to power, and press and hold the setup button (usually 10 to 15 seconds) until the status indicator flashes amber or white.

Unlike full-sized headphones or home audio gear where individual boards can be serviced, true wireless earbuds are microscopic, glue-sealed devices. Opening the shell destroys the water resistance and acoustic enclosure. Component-level soldering on earbud flex cables is generally not feasible for DIY repairs; when an internal microphone hardware failure occurs, individual bud replacement is the standard solution.
