When active noise cancellation on your Bose QuietComfort Earbuds turns weak or non-responsive, clogged mic grilles, poor ear tip seals, or stuck software modes are usually to blame.

Step 1
Clean all exterior microphone ports

Inspect and reseat the silicone tips
Remove the StayHear Max or original silicone ear tips and check for tears, wax buildup, or misalignment. Re-attach them firmly until they snap into position, then test different tip sizes to ensure a tight, comfortable acoustic seal in your ear canal.

Cycle modes via the Bose Music app
Open the Bose Music app on your phone while connected to the earbuds. Manually toggle through your custom Noise Cancellation presets and force switch between full Quiet and full Aware modes to clear any stuck DSP software states.

Perform a hardware case reset

What's going on
Bose QuietComfort Earbuds rely on a combination of passive acoustic isolation and active noise cancellation (ANC). Each earbud uses feedforward microphones on the outer shell to detect ambient sound and feedback microphones near the speaker nozzle to sample sound inside your ear canal. An onboard digital signal processor (DSP) then generates an inverted sound wave to cancel out low-frequency and ambient noise.
When ANC suddenly drops out, sounds weak, or produces an annoying whistling noise, the balance between these sensors has failed. In most cases, the issue is physical—such as blocked acoustic grilles or a broken tip seal—or a transient firmware state keeping the earbuds locked in Aware mode.

- Unbalanced noise suppression: Traffic or AC drone sounds quiet in one ear but loud in the other.
- High-pitched squealing: A piercing feedback noise occurs when putting the earbud in, touching the outer casing, or adjusting the fit.

- Improper tip seal: If the silicone tip does not form an airtight fit with your ear canal, low-frequency sound bypasses the passive barrier, overpowering the active noise cancellation.
- Moisture shorting feedback sensors: Sweat or rainwater entering the internal nozzle cavity disrupts the feedback microphone, triggering feedback loops or shutting down ANC automatically.
- Firmware synchronization failure: The left and right earbuds occasionally desynchronize, causing one earbud to remain in Transparency mode while the other enters Quiet mode.
- Failed MEMS microphone: Physical impact from drops can break the miniature surface-mount microphones mounted on the main circuit board.
Quick checks first
Before assuming internal hardware failure, perform these immediate triage steps:
- Check physical cleanliness: Wipe down the earbud nozzles and outer acoustic grilles using a dry microfiber cloth and a soft brush. Clean ports are mandatory for ANC processing.
- Test fit stability: Insert the earbud and rotate it back to lock the wing behind your ear ridge. If you can hear ambient room conversation easily without audio playing, your seal is compromised.
- Force-close the Bose app: Kill the Bose Music app on your mobile device, disconnect Bluetooth, re-enable Bluetooth, and reconnect to clear temporary app-to-bud telemetry bugs.
- Check for water contact: If you recently exercised or walked in the rain, leave the earbuds out of the charging case in a dry environment to let internal moisture evaporate.
When it's a real hardware fault
If cleaning the mic ports, re-seating tips, and drying the earbuds does not restore ANC—and you experience a continuous high-pitched squeal whenever ANC is engaged—an internal MEMS microphone has likely suffered permanent water or mechanical damage.
When a feedback microphone fails on an earbud circuit board, the DSP miscalculates the required cancellation signal, creating an internal feedback loop. If the noise cancellation remains completely dead while regular audio plays fine, the ANC processing hardware or microphone circuit path has failed.
Soft resets vs board/panel work
Performing a soft reset via the charging case clears corrupt system register states and re-establishes the master-slave connection between left and right earbuds. This is completely safe and resolves most firmware-related ANC glitches.
However, true hardware repair on modern true wireless earbuds is extremely difficult. The outer shells of the Bose line are sealed with strong structural adhesives to maintain water resistance ratings. Opening the shell to replace tiny surface-mount microphones or repair internal traces usually causes permanent housing damage and destroys water resistance. TWS earbud hardware faults are generally unfeasible for DIY component replacement.
