Step-by-step

Power off device and extend kickstand
1 minTurn off your Microsoft Surface RT completely and flip out the kickstand to access the hidden rear screws.

Remove kickstand screws
2 minUse a Torx T5 screwdriver to remove the screws holding the kickstand to the casing.

Detach kickstand assembly
1 minLift the kickstand away from the rear magnesium body and set it aside.

Heat top camera cover strip
2 minApply mild heat with a heat gun to the plastic cover strip at the top rear of the device to soften the adhesive.

Pry off top camera cover
2 minInsert a thin plastic opening pick under the edge of the plastic strip and gently peel it away.

Remove hidden top bezel screws
3 minUnscrew all revealed Torx screws located under the top plastic cover.

Insert opening pick along seam
2 minInsert a guitar pick or plastic opening tool between the front screen assembly and rear shell near the corner.

Unsnap rear casing perimeter clips
4 minSlide the pick around all sides of the tablet to release the internal plastic retaining clips.

Separate rear casing
2 minLift the rear magnesium casing off the display assembly, taking care not to snag internal flex cables.

Disconnect battery cable
1 minUse a plastic spudger to carefully pry the battery connector straight up off the motherboard.

Unscrew charging port retaining bracket
2 minRemove the small screws securing the metal bracket over the charging port assembly.

Disconnect charging port ribbon cable
2 minGently lift the locking ZIF latch on the connector and pull the charging port ribbon cable free.

Remove faulty charging port module
1 minLift the old charging port module out of its recessed slot in the chassis.

Position new charging port module
2 minPlace the replacement charging port module firmly into the recessed slot on the chassis.

Secure charging port bracket
2 minReinstall the retaining bracket and tighten the screws to hold the charging port in place.

Connect charging port ribbon cable
2 minSlide the flex cable into the motherboard ZIF connector and press down the locking latch.

Reconnect battery cable
1 minAlign and press the battery connector straight down into its motherboard socket.

Snap rear casing into place
3 minAlign the rear shell over the display assembly and press firmly along the edges until clips snap tight.

Reinstall top strip screws and cover
3 minDrive in the top bezel screws and press the plastic camera strip back into place over the adhesive.

Reattach kickstand
2 minPosition the kickstand onto its hinges and secure it using the Torx T5 screws.
