Step-by-step

Heat Display Edges
3 minApply a heat gun around the outer glass edges of the Surface Go for two minutes to soften the strong adhesive.

Attach Suction Cup
2 minPress a suction cup onto the top glass edge and pull upward gently to create a slight gap.

Insert Opening Pick
2 minSlide a thin guitar pick into the gap along the top edge to begin slicing the adhesive seal.

Slice Side Edge Adhesive
4 minSlide picks along the left and right edges, inserting them no deeper than 3mm to protect delicate internal cables.

Slice Bottom Edge Adhesive
3 minCarefully run an opening pick along the bottom edge to clear the remaining screen tape.

Hinge Display Open
2 minGently lift the display glass and hinge it open from the right side like a book.

Unscrew Connector Shield
3 minUse a T3 Torx screwdriver to remove the screws holding the metal display connector shield in place.

Disconnect Display Cable
2 minUse a plastic spudger to gently pop the display flex cable connector straight off the motherboard.

Disconnect Battery Connector
2 minPry up the battery flex connector with a plastic tool to completely cut power to the device.

Unscrew Volume Button Bracket
3 minRemove the T3 Torx screws holding the small metal retaining bracket over the volume button module at the top frame.

Disconnect Volume Button Cable
2 minFlip up the locking tab on the ZIF connector and slide out the volume button flex cable.

Remove Old Volume Assembly
2 minUse tweezers to lift the volume button board and tactile switches out of the magnesium chassis.

Install New Volume Module
3 minAlign the replacement volume button board into the chassis recess and secure it with its metal bracket and screws.

Reconnect Flex Cables and Seal
5 minPlug in the volume ZIF cable, reconnect the battery and display flex cables, reinstall the shield, and press down onto new adhesive.
