Step-by-step

Power off device
1 minCompletely turn off your Microsoft Surface Go and disconnect all power cables. Remove any microSD card present in the tray.

Warm top glass edge
2 minApply heat around the top edge of the glass using a heat gun for about two minutes. Soften the adhesive beneath the bezel.

Attach suction cup
1 minPlace a suction cup near the top-left corner of the screen assembly. Press down firmly to secure a tight vacuum seal.

Insert opening pick
2 minPull up on the suction cup to create a small gap between the glass and frame. Slide a plastic opening pick into the gap.

Slice top adhesive
3 minSlide the pick along the top edge of the tablet to cut through the adhesive. Avoid going deep near the camera and sensor array.

Warm left glass edge
2 minHeat the left side of the display frame using the heat gun for 1 to 2 minutes. Ensure the frame becomes warm to the touch.

Slice left adhesive
2 minGuide the opening pick down the left side of the glass. Keep the pick inserted no deeper than 3 mm to avoid internal flex cables.

Warm bottom glass edge
2 minApply heat along the lower edge of the Surface Go screen. Keep the heat gun moving constantly to prevent screen discoloration.

Slice bottom adhesive
2 minSlide your opening pick across the bottom bezel to sever the adhesive strip. Use caution around the Surface Connect area.

Warm right glass edge
2 minHeat the right edge of the screen assembly to soften the remaining adhesive bond. Keep the heat source several inches away.

Slice right adhesive
2 minPass the opening pick down the right edge of the glass to complete cutting the adhesive perimeter.

Open screen assembly
2 minGently lift the right side of the screen and pivot it open towards the left like a book cover. Do not pull the screen off completely yet.

Unscrew cable shield
2 minUse a T3 Torx screwdriver to remove the screws securing the metal shield over the display connector.

Remove metal shield
1 minLift the metal display connector shield off the motherboard using precision tweezers.

Disconnect battery
1 minInsert the flat end of a plastic spudger under the battery flex connector and pry it straight up to isolate power.

Disconnect display cable
1 minPry the display ribbon press connector straight up off the motherboard socket using a plastic spudger.

Remove old screen
1 minLift the old display assembly off the frame completely and place it aside.

Scrape old adhesive
4 minUse a plastic prying tool to scrape away residual adhesive tape from the magnesium frame perimeter.

Clean frame perimeter
3 minWipe down the frame edges with a lint-free cloth dampened with high-concentration isopropyl alcohol.

Apply new adhesive
4 minPeel and position pre-cut double-sided display adhesive strips along the perimeter of the Surface Go frame.

Connect new display
2 minPosition the new screen near the frame and press its display connector firmly into the motherboard socket.

Reconnect battery
1 minAlign and press the battery connector back into its socket on the motherboard.

Reinstall cable shield
2 minPlace the metal connector shield back over the connections and tighten the T3 Torx screws to secure it.

Press screen in place
3 minAlign the replacement screen over the body frame and press firmly along all four edges to bond the adhesive.
After your Microsoft Surface Go screen replacement
Power the Surface Go back on and test the screen replacement function before you put every screw away. Check touch/display response, charging, cameras, buttons, and wireless as relevant to this repair. If something fails after closing the device, reopen carefully and reseat the connectors for this Microsoft Surface Go job before assuming the part is defective. Keep leftover adhesive and screws labeled in case you need a second pass.
