Step-by-step

Power down the device
1 minTurn off your Microsoft Surface 3 completely and unplug all cables. Ensure the device is not in sleep mode before proceeding.

Heat the screen perimeter
3 minApply a heat gun or hair dryer along the glass edges for two minutes to soften the strong screen adhesive. Keep the heat source moving to avoid burning the display.

Attach a suction cup
1 minPlace a suction cup near the top corner of the screen assembly. Press down firmly to create a secure vacuum seal against the glass.

Slice top screen adhesive
2 minPull up gently on the suction cup while inserting a opening pick under the glass edge. Slide the pick across the top border to slice through the softened adhesive.

Slice side screen adhesive
2 minInsert additional picks along the left and right borders of the screen. Gently slide them down the sides, taking care around the camera array.

Slice bottom screen adhesive
2 minSlide a pick along the bottom edge near the kickstand hinge. Keep the pick shallow to avoid damaging flex cables underneath.

Lift the display assembly
2 minGently swing the top edge of the display open like a book. Do not pull the screen away entirely yet, as short ribbon cables are still connected.

Unscrew the display cable bracket
2 minLocate the metal shield over the display connectors near the board. Remove the screws securing this metal bracket using a precision screwdriver.

Disconnect the display cables
2 minUse a plastic spudger to gently pop the display ribbon cable connectors straight up from their sockets. Lift the display glass off and set it aside safely.

Unscrew the main motherboard shield
3 minRemove the small screws securing the large metal EMI shield covering the motherboard and battery connector. Keep screws organized by size.

Remove the motherboard shield

Disconnect the battery interface

Heat the rear housing

Pry up the left battery cell
3 minInsert a wide plastic card or spudger flat underneath the left side of the battery. Slowly lever upward, slicing through the heavy adhesive underneath.

Pry up the right battery cell
3 minWork the plastic card under the right side of the battery cell. Pry steadily without puncturing or sharply bending the flexible battery pouch.

Remove the old battery
1 minLift the entire degraded battery out of the chassis once all adhesive is separated. Recycle the old battery properly according to local hazardous waste guidelines.

Clean old adhesive residue
3 minApply high-concentration isopropyl alcohol to residual adhesive left in the battery cavity. Wipe the metal floor clean with a lint-free cloth.

Apply new battery adhesive strips
2 minLay down fresh battery adhesive strips across the aluminum chassis floor where the replacement battery will sit. Peel off the protective film backing.

Install the replacement battery
2 minAlign the new battery precisely inside the cavity and press it firmly into the adhesive strips. Connect its power cable to the motherboard terminal.

Reinstall shields and connect screen
4 minReattach the motherboard shield with its original screws. Align display ribbon connectors over their sockets, snap them into place, and reinstall the cable bracket.

Reseal the screen assembly
3 minApply new pre-cut adhesive strips around the frame perimeter. Carefully align the glass screen and press along the borders to seal the device closed.
