Step-by-step

Power off device
1 minEnsure the Surface Pro X is completely powered down and disconnected from any charger or external display.

Open SSD hatch
1 minInsert a SIM eject tool or thin pin into the access hole on the back cover to pop open the SSD door.

Remove the SSD
2 minUnscrew the single Torx T5 screw securing the SSD and pull the drive straight out of its slot.

Heat display perimeter

Dry logic board completely
15 minUse compressed air to blow liquid out from beneath surface-mount chips and let the board dry for at least 30 minutes.

Clean inner chassis and contacts
5 minWipe away any moisture and residue inside the aluminum housing using a lint-free cloth dampened with isopropyl alcohol.

Reinstall logic board
4 minPlace the cleaned logic board back into the chassis and secure it with the original Torx screws.

Reconnect internal cables and battery
5 minAttach all flex cables, reinstall the EMI shields, and reconnect the main battery cable.

Apply new frame adhesive
8 minClean remaining old tape from the chassis rim and place new pre-cut adhesive strips around the display perimeter.

Attach display and test
