Step-by-step

Power off the device
1 minShut down your Surface Pro X completely and disconnect any attached power cables or accessories.

Heat display perimeter
3 minUse a heat gun on low heat to warm the outer edges of the screen for two minutes to soften the display adhesive.

Apply suction cup
2 minPlace a suction cup near the top edge of the glass and pull upward gently to create a small gap.

Slice adhesive
5 minInsert a guitar pick into the gap and slide it along the perimeter to cut through the display adhesive.

Open screen assembly
2 minCarefully lift the left edge of the screen and swing it open like a book to expose the internal flex cables.

Remove display shield
2 minUnscrew the T3 Torx screws holding the metal display cable shield and lift the shield out.

Disconnect display cable
2 minUse a plastic spudger to gently pry the display flex cable connector straight up from the motherboard.

Disconnect battery cable
2 minPry up the main battery connector from the motherboard to cut power before touching internal circuits.

Unscrew button bracket
3 minRemove the T3 Torx screws securing the metal bracket over the volume and power button assembly.

Disconnect volume flex cable
2 minUse a spudger to flip open the ZIF retaining flap and slide the volume button flex cable out of its socket.

Remove button assembly
2 minUse precision tweezers to lift the original volume button flex cable and key switches out of the side frame slot.

Position replacement buttons
3 minAlign the new volume button flex assembly into the chassis frame recess and press the switches into place.

Secure button bracket
2 minPlace the metal bracket back over the button array and tighten the T3 Torx screws.

Reconnect volume cable
2 minSlide the volume button flex ribbon into the ZIF socket and snap the locking lever down firmly.

Reconnect battery cable
2 minAlign the battery connector over its motherboard socket and press down firmly to re-engage power.

Attach display cable
3 minSnap the display cable connector back onto the board and reinstall the metal shield with its T3 screws.

Apply frame adhesive
4 minClean remaining adhesive off the frame with isopropyl alcohol, then lay down pre-cut adhesive strips.

Press screen down
3 minAlign the glass screen with the frame and press firmly around all edges to set the new adhesive.
