Step-by-step

Power Down and Remove SSD Access Door
2 minEnsure the Surface Pro X is completely powered off. Insert a SIM eject pin into the release hole on the back cover panel to pop open the SSD access door.

Remove the M.2 SSD
2 minUnscrew the single Torx screw holding the M.2 drive in place. Gently slide the SSD out of its socket and set it aside.

Heat the Outer Display Edges
4 minApply a heated iOpener or heat gun around the perimeter of the screen for 2 minutes to soften the frame adhesive.

Attach Suction Handle
2 minPress a suction cup firmly near the top edge of the glass display. Pull upward gently until a slight gap opens between the glass and the body.

Insert Plastic Opening Pick
2 minInsert a plastic opening pick into the gap at the top edge. Do not insert the pick deeper than 3 mm to avoid damaging internal sensors.

Slice Peripheral Screen Adhesive
8 minSlide the pick around the top, left, and right sides of the device to cut through the remaining adhesive.

Open Display Assembly
3 minCarefully lift the top edge of the display like a book cover, pivoting off the bottom edge near the keyboard connector.

Remove Display Connector Shield
3 minUnscrew the Torx fasteners securing the metal shield over the main display connector. Lift the metal shield off using tweezers.

Disconnect Display Cable
2 minUse the flat edge of a plastic spudger to pry the display press-connector straight up off the motherboard socket. Set the screen panel aside.

Disconnect Left and Right Speaker Cables
3 minLocate the speaker cable press-fit connectors on each side of the logic board. Pry them up gently using a spudger.

Unbolt Speaker Assemblies
4 minRemove the Torx screws securing the left and right speaker enclosures to the magnesium chassis.

Remove Old Speaker Modules
2 minLift the left and right speaker modules out of their chassis cavities using tweezers or opening tools.

Seat New Speaker Modules
3 minLower the new speaker assemblies into the left and right frame cavities and secure them using the original Torx screws.

Reconnect Speaker Cables
2 minAlign the speaker flex cables over their respective motherboard sockets and press down firmly until they snap into place.

Clean Frame and Glass Perimeter Adhesive
5 minApply 90%+ isopropyl alcohol to a microfiber cloth and clean away all residual adhesive on the frame and display perimeter.

Apply Adhesive and Reattach Display
7 minApply fresh pre-cut adhesive strips to the chassis edge, reconnect the display cable, reattach the metal shield, and press the screen down firmly into place.
