Step-by-step

Power off and open kickstand
1 minCompletely shut down the Surface Pro X and flip open the kickstand to full extension.

Eject the SIM and SSD cover
1 minInsert a SIM eject tool into the release hole on the back panel cover to pop it open.

Remove the SSD screw
2 minUse a Torx T3 screwdriver to remove the single retaining screw securing the M.2 SSD.

Remove the M.2 SSD
1 minSlide the SSD straight out of its slot and set it aside in an anti-static bag.

Heat the display edges
3 minApply heat evenly around the outer edges of the screen for two minutes using a heat gun set to low.

Attach a suction cup
2 minPlace a suction cup near the top edge of the screen and pull upward gently to create a small gap.

Insert an opening pick
2 minSlide a thin plastic opening pick into the gap created between the display glass and the aluminum frame.

Slice perimeter adhesive
8 minSlide opening picks carefully along all four edges of the screen to cut through the display adhesive.

Open the display panel
2 minCarefully tilt the display open from the top edge, taking care not to strain the ribbon cables at the bottom.

Remove display cable shield screws
2 minUnscrew the Torx T3 screws securing the metal display cable shield to the board.

Detach the display cable shield
1 minUse tweezers to lift and remove the metal shield covering the display ribbon connector.

Disconnect the display cable
2 minPry the display press connector straight up from the logic board using a plastic spudger and set the screen aside.

Disconnect the battery cable
2 minUse a plastic spudger to disconnect the main battery connector from the logic board to disable power.

Disconnect antenna and flex cables
5 minCarefully pry up all coaxial antenna cables and ribbon connectors attached to the logic board.

Unscrew the heat sink shield
4 minRemove all Torx T3 screws holding down the heat sink plate and copper shielding.

Remove the heat sink assembly
2 minGently lift the thermal shield and heatsink assembly away from the main board.

Remove logic board screws
4 minUnscrew all remaining Torx T3 mounting screws securing the logic board to the aluminum chassis.

Lift out the logic board
3 minCarefully lift the logic board up from the top edge and clear it out of the chassis.
