Overview
Step-by-step
- 1
Power off and disconnect external cables
1 minShut down the Surface Pro 8 completely through Windows. Unplug the charger and remove all attached accessories or memory cards.
- 2
Heat the perimeter of the screen
3 minUse a heat gun set to low to warm the outer edges of the display for two to three minutes. Keep the heat source moving constantly to soften the frame adhesive without damaging the LCD.
- 3
Attach a suction cup near the top corner
2 minPress a heavy-duty suction cup onto the glass near the top left corner. Pull upward with steady pressure to create a small opening between the display glass and the aluminum frame.
- 4
Insert an opening pick into the seam
1 minInsert a thin guitar pick into the slight gap created by the suction cup. Do not slide the pick deeper than 3 mm to avoid damaging display ribbon cables.
- 5
Slice through the top edge adhesive
3 minSlowly slide the opening pick along the top edge of the tablet to cut through the screen adhesive. Insert additional picks along the cut path to prevent the glue from re-sealing.
- 6
Cut the side adhesive strips
3 minRe-heat the left and right borders of the screen if needed. Carefully slide picks down both vertical sides of the frame to separate the perimeter adhesive.
- 7
Slice the bottom display adhesive
3 minSlide the pick across the bottom edge with extreme caution. Keep the pick shallow to avoid damaging the delicate display control board near the base.
- 8
Open the display panel like a book
1 minGently lift the right side of the screen assembly and swing it open toward the left edge. Rest the panel flat without straining the attached screen cables.
- 9
Remove the display shield screws
2 minLocate the metal shield covering the display cable connector. Use a Phillips #00 screwdriver to remove the two screws securing the shield to the motherboard.
- 10
Remove the display connector shield
1 minGrasp the metal cover with plastic tweezers and lift it off the motherboard. Place the shield aside in a small magnetic tray.
- 11
Disconnect the display cable
1 minPry the display flex cable press-connector straight up from its motherboard socket using the flat end of a plastic spudger. Lift the display screen completely off the frame.
- 12
Unscrew the heatsink retaining screws
3 minRemove the Phillips screws holding down the copper thermal shield and heatsink module over the main processor board.
- 13
Lift and remove the heatsink
2 minCarefully pry up the heatsink module and set it aside. Avoid bending the heat pipes during removal.
- 14
Disconnect the battery cable
1 minLocate the main battery flex connector on the board. Insert a plastic spudger underneath the connector lip and pop it off the socket.
- 15
Apply isopropyl alcohol along battery edges
3 minDrip high-percentage isopropyl alcohol along the upper and side boundaries of the battery cells. Allow it to sit for two minutes to weaken the strong factory adhesive beneath.
- 16
Pry up the first battery cell
4 minWork a flexible plastic card beneath the outer edge of the left battery cell. Push inward with steady, levering motions to slice through the adhesive layer.
- 17
Pry up the remaining battery cell
4 minSlide the plastic card under the right battery cell while applying a few extra drops of alcohol. Lift slowly to free the cell without bending or puncturing the casing.
- 18
Remove the old battery assembly
2 minLift the degraded battery unit out of the chassis and place it immediately into a fire-safe container.
- 19
Clean residual adhesive from chassis
3 minScrape away remaining glue residue using a plastic tool. Wipe down the battery tray surface with a lint-free cloth dampened with isopropyl alcohol.
- 20
Install new battery adhesive strips
2 minPeel the protective backing off the replacement battery adhesive strips and press them firmly onto the metal floor of the battery bay.
- 21
Set the new battery in place
2 minAlign the replacement battery over the adhesive strips, ensuring proper orientation of the power connector. Press down evenly on the cells to secure the bond.
- 22
Plug in the battery connector
1 minAlign the battery flex cable over the socket on the motherboard and press straight down until it snaps firmly into place.
- 23
Reinstall the heatsink assembly
3 minPosition the heatsink back over the processor and align the screw holes. Tighten the retaining screws in a crisscross pattern.
- 24
Reconnect the screen flex cable
1 minHold the display near the left side of the frame and snap the main display cable back onto its motherboard socket.
- 25
Reinstall the display cable shield
2 minPlace the metal shield back over the display connector socket. Secure it in place using the two Phillips #00 screws.
- 26
Apply fresh screen perimeter adhesive
3 minApply pre-cut adhesive strips along the entire rim of the aluminum enclosure, ensuring no gaps or overlaps remain.
- 27
Press the display into position
2 minAlign the display glass with the chassis frame and press down firmly around all edges for 60 seconds to lock the adhesive seal.
